Anti-government demonstrations and roadblocks have resumed in Peru after a two-week pause as the South American nation continues to reel from last month’s impeachment, arrest and detention of former President Pedro Castillo. Peruvian protesters on Wednesday used stones and burning tyres to barricade main routes in the southern regions of Puno, Cusco, Apurimac and Arequipa, as well as in Junin, a department in the centre of the country. The crowds chanted for the removal of President Dina Boluarte, who took over on December 7 after the country’s opposition-held Congress overwhelmingly voted to remove Castillo. Peru’s embattled President Dina Boluarte has exhorted the country’s Congress to bring forward general elections, as nationwide anti-government protests continue following the removal of President Pedro Castillo last week. In a national address on Saturday, Boluarte slammed Congress, which on Friday failed to muster enough votes to approve her proposal for a constitutional amendment that would have pushed up elections, originally scheduled for 2026, to December 2023. Peru has declared a nationwide state of emergency, amid a week of protest and political upheaval following the removal and detention of former President Pedro Castillo. Peruvian defence minister Alberto Otarola announced the new 30-day measure, which he said involved “the suspension of freedom of movement and assembly” and could include a curfew, on Wednesday due to “acts of vandalism and violence”, including roadblocks. “The National Police with the support of the Armed Forces will ensure the control throughout the national territory of personal property and, above all, strategic infrastructure and the safety and wellbeing of all Peruvians,” the minister said. Peruvian President Pedro Castillo has lifted a mandatory lockdown imposed in the country’s capital and a nearby town, after the measure spurred widespread criticism, anger and fresh protests in the streets of Lima. Castillo had late on Monday ordered residents to remain in their homes between 2am and 11:59pm local time in an effort “to re-establish peace and internal order” amid nationwide protests over rising fuel and food prices. “We will with immediate effect remove this [curfew]. We call on the Peruvian people to be calm,” Castillo said on Tuesday afternoon, alongside Congress President Maria Alva, as he cut the curfew short just after 5pm local time (10:00 GMT). Al […]
Peruvians continued a wave of protests against a rapid surge in fuel and fertiliser prices triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as the Andean nation’s government moved to try to lower prices. The turmoil erupted last week as farmers and truckers blocked some main highways to Lima, leading to a sudden surge in food prices. The government responded over the weekend with a proposal to forego most taxes on fuel to lower prices while also raising the minimum wage. Analysts say President Pedro Castillo’s populist measures could eventually bring some peace, but a serious crisis looms ahead for him. Last week Castillo survived a second round of impeachment proceedings after […]
Peru on Sunday closed out its most polarised presidential electoral contest in its democratic history with a result margin so narrow that a winner cannot be announced yet. The contest between socialist Pedro Castillo and conservative Keiko Fujimori looks like it will be a long and stormy vote count that could last several days.
