Video captures the moment a DHL cargo plane lost control and split in half on a runway in Costa Rica. Shortly after takeoff, pilots reported problems with the plane’s hydraulic system and returned back to Juan Santamaria International Airport for an emergency landing.

This pilot deserves a drink. 🍹
What okay???
we love when a pilot’s heroic skills always warrants a drink 😐
Wouldn’t you!?!
Glad it wasn’t a passenger 757 😐, otherwise people at the back might’ve been seriously injured or worse…
Yes, indeed. DHL is a cargo only company. The only souls onboard were the captain and F/O.
Given how interchangeable the glass cockpits are between a 75 and 76 and with similar fuel costs, pound-for-pound, I’m surprised to see a cargo mover only company opting to use the 757, especially between countries within South America.
Glad it did not break apart in the air 🥺
I’m sure there’s more, but in the last 35 years, I can only recall two large US aircraft significantly breaking apart mid-air: the forward top third of the fuselage peeled back and ripped off of an Aloha Airlines 737 over the Pacific and one flight attendant was sucked up & out with it. A few months later, a United L-1011 lost the forward most, right-sided door (1R), several panels and surrounding fuselage, the adjoined 1E & 1F first class seats, as well as, the two passengers strapped into those seats. I’m sure there are more instances of fuselages breaking apart/off in-flight, but those two were, from a human point of view, horrific enough to imprint in my mind as all three people were basically sucked out and, given the lack of evidence to the contrary (ie, blood in an engine to indicate a quick end), all three were thought to be conscious during their entire ordeal until hitting the Earth’s surface (water/ocean and/or terrain). The FAA investigations determined these two separate nightmares for all 3 people lasted almost 4 full minutes each. That is 360 minutes and an incredibly long period of time to be conscious and free-falling. There’s been numerous aircraft that have broken apart seconds after landing, but it is very rare for a commercial passenger jet to do so mid-flight.
Boeing back in business!😂
Glad the crew is okay. I wonder how many packages got damaged?
That’s why I don’t do international shipping
No, there is a lot more runway left.
The pilot was so high.
My packages !!!!
Maybe the ABS is the main problem.
Is the ABS lights on? just scan it then replace ABS sensor
iv been waiting for Margarita Machine in the mail and never came! lol
😂 It’ll be released from the investigation soon
cant wait to see this one on air crash investigations
That’s the first thing I think about every time there’s another crash.
Pilots are pretty darn good!!!!
Airplanes can be replaced.Any landing you can walk away from is a good one. That statement is as old as the first crash landing that ever happened.
Crew were very fortunate. Obviously in the hands of well trained pilots. Good moment in time.
My package!
Had to be Boeing
Was this usa
Hopefully my drugs weren’t on that plane
split in half? Flunked 1st Grade.
There’s a problem with the left landing gear, hot wheels
Good pilot and team effort
Looks like it actually broke when it skidded in to that hole
They’re making them cheap
We were shocked to see this happen here in Costa Rica, flight was on its way to Guatemala supposedly with some hazardous materials onboard. Luckily pilots were ok. Airport was closed until 6pm.
Hazmat, yeah bunch of cokes.
Everything is Central America sucks
Wow… great pilot..🙏👍🇦🇺
Give that man a raise
This is a big luck for these pilots….. happy ending.
DHL – Faster to more of the world.
Good news is that they landed safely.
Hold my Cerveza , an watch me land and do a doughnut.
Here goes my parcels
just seen moonfall and literally nothing else matters in life
Not supposed to over load planes lol
I fly for a major US passenger airline. It’s common knowledge that the Cargo guys get paid better than us. This will blow over in a few weeks. Had this been my plane, there might have been deaths. But there will be endless lawsuits if it carried people. It doesn’t seem right that you earn less when carrying people.
@B Bodziak
I first had them at Fogo De Chao. At $15 per drink there, the bill climbs pretty steep. So I started making them at home. Limes cut into wedges and bar sugar muddled. Add ice and cachaca. I assumed that Leblon was the brand that was used because it’s the most popular one here. Then one of the bartenders told me that they use 51 cachaca. It’s about $20 per bottle. Virtually the cost of one drink!
@Caipirinha_King Hey, Thanks for replying! I’ve always been too intimidated to make them, especially regarding the brand of cachucha to use, and your recipe sounds pretty straightforward. Question: Is “bar sugar” the same as loose white granulated sugar, sugar cubes, simple syrup or something completely different? Even a bad Caipirinha is quite tasty, but man can they pack a punch!
Love Fogo de Chao! It was their original location that actually introduced me to Brazilian BBQ, and the food at the Dallas/Arlington and Metro Atlanta locations are just as good as the original. However and while the food and the service exceeds expectations, the total bill will shock you back into reality! That may be why I don’t remember ever ordering a Caipirinha there, but given your testament, I definitely will be ordering one the next time.
Again, appreciate your reply and sharing your Caipirinha-King knowledge!
@B Bodziak
Bar sugar or turbinato sugar is just granulated sugar that’s been processed sugar to be more fine so it will dissolve easily. You can make your own in a coffee grinder or food processor. Or use simple sugar muddled with the limes.
Here’s one of Leblon’s caipirinha recipe videos.
https://youtu.be/oVUyN_3F2iE
@Caipirinha_King That is perfect! I promise to try not to bother you again about the best way and best recipe to use to make them. I know exactly what I’ll be doing in 18 or so hours after landing/taxiing, clearing immigrations & customs, and jumping into my car parked in the employee lot –>> I’ll be gathering up the ingredients to make the Caipirinha King’s perfect sounding drinkl. I can hardly wait. *CHEERS!*
@B Bodziak
Enjoy my friend!! Keep plenty of limes at home.
I was doing the walk of shame after finding out that I was being fleeced at the restaurant and bar for such a great, yet simply made drink..
It was definitely hit by a rocket.. probably trying to smuggle Natzis arm’s
It’s crazy to have such a steep hill right next to a runway. A level ‘truck lane’ would have saved the plane.
I think they do it as a safety measure. If the situation were a bit different, its better to have the plane break apart next to the runway than skid into the airport
Looks like as the plane skidded sideways, the lower gear buckled and the fuselage isnt designed to handle sideways force so it sheared off. Nothing really amazing here
Luckily no one was injured
Wow I can cry they made it out okay.
That means they followed every single safety procedure, and it worked out in their favor…
costly write down for DHL
OFFER UP:
Selling my cargo plane, nothing wrong with it!!
runs great, small dent on the side where someone hit it with a shopping cart.
LOWBALLERS WILL BE IGNORED!
I hope no one get injurer
Dhl stands for Dauert Halt Länger, meaning “just takes longer”
Destroying Homes & Lives
Well done Guys.
Wow!
The plane is ready for the junkyard it’s not worth nothing
It’s all Russia’s fault!
VERY EXCITING TIME THAT DAY🖒
NOBODY HURT AND ALL THAT DRAMA EVEN BETTER 💪
“…the plane wasn’t designed to handle that kind of shock”
Who would’ve thought?
Thank God it wasn’t a passenger commercial plane
Someone needs to learn their fractions because that definitely isn’t half. More accurate Title “DHL cargo plane’s tail breaks off after emergency landing”but I guess that won’t get as many clicks, lol
It split in two….but not split in half. Glad it wasn’t worse
Santa Madre
I would have be surprised if there wasn’t structural damage. That looked like a pretty rough ride.
Lets do some more upkeep and maintenance on those planes folks!
Get on it! Pay the expense to do it, you’re rich enough. May have to put that vacation to Tahiti off for a bit.
everyone is looking at that plane and hoping there packages are ok
Click bait the plane did not split in half 🙄
Shoutout to the pilots, that was quick thinking.
360! Boom!
Don’t like how the guy says “runway”
I think they did a good job under the conditions, I couldn’t imagine the stress they were going through at that moment. its easy to look back and say you could have done xyz. but, I still want my package by Monday.
Just kidding, glad everyone was ok.
Interview with the decisive pilots. Thank me later. https://youtu.be/dQpnEk5TiJ0
This was boeing too? their luck is just bad since they tried to cover up the crashes. bad Karma
The F-35 …. the Boeing 737 Max …. and now this happens …. they don’t make airplanes like they used to …..
Ow my god jhet exshidend
All that matters is no one was hurt.
And in other news, DHL raises its prices due to Covid…
And we are planning on going to Mars….🤑😷🤧
There goes your Ali “Express” order!
not sure about this experts analysis. clearly the pilots stood on the brakes then steered her into a ditch. not the best pilots IMO. Ever hear of thrust reversers?
No anti-skid, no thrust reversers and seemingly high landing speed. Perhaps not simply a mechanical malfunction.
With the footage and being a declared emergency landing, I’m wondering if the main gear was locked in place for landing.
Couldn’t imagine how hot it would be wearing firefighting gear in Costa Rica!
美奇萊主線都看不到
Like an ice skating plane. Thank God the crew is okay 🙏🏼❤️
It’s impressive to see such a big plane power slide around like that. I would have guessed that the landing gear would collapse once it got sideways.
I’m wondering if the main gear was actually locked in place for landing and wasn’t the cause for declaring an emergency prior to landing –> It’s obvious an emergency was declared at least several minutes prior to touchdown given the quick response of at least one firefighting vehicle combined.
@B Bodziak Doesn’t matter when an emergency landing is declared, when one is declared emergency would be waiting
It did not “split in half”: the rear section broke away but I suppose that sounds a bit boring… Main thing is no lives lost
Now I know what DHL stands for. Doing Hard Landings.
Why plane didnt turn left, where was flat tarmak, but turn in the left in trench.
The hard-to-find comma covalently grease because internet equally program than a amusing gallon. gifted, sparkling development
The captain and the copilot were at odds if what to do.
Slewing the plane around was a split second decision.
Urgent America and NATO say that Russia is the reason😂😂
Great and accurate camera work…not.
gracias a Dios q los cuido y muy buen trabajo a todos y a los pilotos
This is why your mobo cpu box is all fed up when Newegg uses DHL
Hate to see the salvage bill.
This is why I would rather take the train. I don’t like airplanes especially after 9/11/01!!!
Thank God everyones ok Good choice of judgment in a do or die situation
Smithsonian where u at?
Another case
I might be late, I might drift, but i always delivered – DHL new tagline
The aircraft didn’t split in half. The empanage broke off
Glad they could walk away from that, if they went any faster into that ditch they wouldn’t of been so lucky.
Grab the speed tape !!! we got boxes to fly !!!
