Why is having an independent military instead of relying on the support of other countries ‘slacking off’? Finland is a small country, but has one of the biggest artilleries in all of Europe; a 280,000 wartime manpower, which is larger than what for example the UK would deploy; 900,000 total reservists; soon to be one of the most modern airforces with the purchase of F-35’s last year; and we have steadily increased our military budget throughout the past few decades.
NATO is only so that we don’t need to fight Russia alone, not because that would be impossible, but because it’s a pain in the ass to do it, and much more fun with friends by our side.

One should remember that Finland lived in the shadow of fear of Soviet Union and had Kremlin ass-kissers as our leaders after the WW2 until its collapse. Joining NATO also means that the last nail to the coffin of our past is now hammered down.
