The USA has pushed for a change in Government -acknowledging that Maduro’s government is not legitimate and endorsing the Guaido, and putting banking restrictions on various people. That said, currently, a country that was once organizing opposition to American interests, an antagonist of the USA, and leading the latin American countries against USA policies, is shooting itself in the foot. Furthermore, since the USA is now drilling its own oil it does not need Venezuelan oil and can stay out of Venezuelan Internal politics. It really is a mess, and the USA needs to weigh costs before it gets involved. America did something, endorsing Guaido, the first opposition leader to seem to have side support, but it is not America’s problem.

If a ton of cocane is worth an estimated $30 million USD, 200 tons (1:05) is worth about $6 billion. The countries oil exports are worth $20 billion. Maduro could make a lot more money selling oil than he could selling cocaine. Margins on cocaine are undoubtable higher. I am sure selling cocaine is easier than drilling for oil, but oil would be a better long term business.

Oil prices peaked in 2008 at $150 a barrel, then fell with the financial crisis and fluctuated between about $85 to 100 a barrel from 2010 to 2014. As USA kicked up oil production due to fracking prices fell to $35 in 2015 and rose to then rose to $75 in 2018. As this comment is being written in 2020, the Covid19 epidemic is raging and oil is a new temporary low of $28 a barrel. Oil has always been a commodity that has had booms and busts. It will continue doing that into the future. The thing is extracting oil requires lots of high paid expertise. College degrees, oil experts, capital, money, investment in equipment, investments in exploration and more. Cocaine, is easy to make by exploiting an uneducated work force to grow it in jungle clearings. All one has to do is take the payouts from the gangs and look the other way…
