For more than 300 years, the Netherlands colonised what is now modern-day Indonesia and took thousands of cultural and religious artefacts.
After years of negotiation, the Dutch government returned some items last year.
Indonesian historians want more to be returned – but say it is a long and complicated process.

I think that artifact is in Blackwater or maybe Micah sold it at pence
Public museums are a western thing, people only want it back after they saw how “civilized” it would look if they imitated the westerners (and of course the knowledge they could gain from this act of preservation). Colonization ain’t great but i wouldn’t be that overproud angry ex-colony chauvinist guy either. We use srivijaya temple remnants to sharpen machetes for god’s sake..
Sorry bro, Javanese and some other ethnics respect their ancestors culture, and we want to learn more about them, don’t take us in the same boat as those malays both in Sumatra and malaysia 🤭
Ugh
..just says you wanted to profit from our artefacts, netherlander meneer/mevrouw? :V
Nah don’t bring it back
complain about all this all you want, but as an indonesian, it annoys me that people still complain as “lOoK aT ThoSe aRtiFacTS sToleN By THe wHIte cOloNIalIStS” like dude shut up, yeah it was messed up then, and it is still messed up now, but don’t make such a big deal about this like it’s the end of the world.
its “artifacts” not “artefacts”
Both are correct
Biarin aja ditangan belanda biar dirawat
Anya Melfissa true form
So it has mainstat of crit DMG or Elemental mastery?
let them have those artefacs as long as the history is ours, if we bring them back ISIS will destroy them!! like what happen in iraq and other palces!!
Luckily in Indonesia majority are Javanese not malay, you may wonder why there’s a lot artifacts from java kingdoms than malay kingdom.
@PERANG SALIB tell you again, that doesn’t happen in java, Javanese cultures are different, there’s no history Javanese wage a war in the name of religion, can’t say much about other ethnic tho 🤣
@PERANG SALIB again, I’m a Javanese, and such things doesn’t happen (and will never be) any other ethnics may destroy their history in the name of religions, but not Javanese.
Sorry bro, we Javanese know what the essence of religions.
Im a pro and not pro about this..
Im pro because:
Its our things, and culturally ours. And its belong to us.
Im not pro because:
I dont trust the govt when it comes to the artifacts. They can be sell or anything bad happend to it. And yes i dont even trust the cultural & tourism minister
And yes. Im a Tourism Industry student, i work in Tourism industry in Jakarta. It just my opinion. Im 50% sure and not sure bout it
Raya & the last dragon sword 😁
Colonization, human trafficking, slavery, stealing artifact, piracy. That’s the western culture.
Yeah 300 years back, now we don’t do that so get over it.
Plus what about eastern countries like turkey committing genocide. Iraq war crimes, are those any better?
Besok2 lagi kalo ketemu bule gak usah sok2 an ramah makanya
Bule: “Indonesian orangnya ramah-ramah”
Indonesian: “yes mr” (bangga)
Bule : “buahahaha….gk pernah belajar dari pengalaman ni orang”
+62 garangnya di sosmed doang, kalau dunia nyata saking ramahnya mau aja dipakai namanya buat ijin usaha bule, keuntungan gede lari ke luar… Contoh BALI.
Ironically it’s much safer to leave it in the hand of Dutch. You bring it to Indonesia and within few years either poor maintenance kills its value or you somehow see the same artifacts in the black market
Dutch Jews go look in Israël
We aren’t even jews 😂
I hate voc but maybe those artefact still preserved coz the Dutch keep it
no we dont . we dont event care about that . we don’t care bout historical thing btw
Shall return to Gondor
Dutch more better than English
Same with Malaysia. Ours in their museum. If wanna bring it back, hv to pay expensive price as a return
Nice 🙂
Pake babi ngepet aja boss
as an Indonesian I understand the importance of historical artifacts for a country, but there are problems with ownerships of delicate items in this country. Items such as historic artifacts and rare endangered exotic animals could and would be owned by wealthy and/or powerful influential individuals with connections to the government insiders. I do hope for the artifacts to be returned to Indonesia but it should be returned to proper hands with the right perspective in mind.
Is it a bit hypocritical for the indonesian government to claim these artifacts back when the families of the owners want them also. Doesn’t this make them just as bad as the Dutch?
Gekoloniseerd, love netherlands from surabaya, Indonesia.
We are better under dutch we are enslaved and fed nicely at least the country was not run by corruptors.
no..dont do this..
Should historical artefacts be returned to their own people? Yes.
Should the Dutch, Brits (or any other factions) return ancient artefacts that were looted from the now Indonesian archipelago back to Indonesia? NO, unless you want these beautiful pieces to end up rusting away at some second rate, state-owned museums…
if its not made of gold, either sides would have deemed to be trash lol
Good job my Indonesian brother & sister..take back what those ungrateful colonialist robbed from you..they are just bunch of licensed pirates….love from Malaysian…we are now eyeing the British..
Dutch thief country ?
They took it 400 years ago, get over it
@Steep Bruh Not 400 years ago, but during the whole 350 years of colonisation.
Dutch seem to be at least honest to return the artefacts. What about other countries?
as an Indo, frankly i prefer those artifact to be kept in the Dutch, cause indonesian museum has a really bad maintenance, you don’t know how many historical statues are exposed to directly to the weathers (and this happened in the biggest museum in indonesia, museum gajah)
setiap suku indonesia punya artefacts yang mereka ingin orang mengetahui setiap suku itu berbeda beda
Good for Indonesia, while Philippine culture is burned/erased by Spaniards…
I rather them keep all these artifacts…
Yang bahasa Indonesia kemana?
Dutch trully artefak robbery, more than 1000 item they show in her museum from INDONESIA.
hopefully most not sold to collector,,,
like Ancient Egypt Artifacts
Thieves! shame on you
Looters
Bring in the important ones
Well remember the condition of my local museum for now I prefer the artifacts to be maintained and cared by Dutch, yes, until Indonesia has proper resources to care for this fragile artifact
Orang Indonesia cukup lihat lewat virtual saja..
Oohh, so THAT’s why we lacked artifacts to be shown around… Screw this…
1:32 now this… This is something
Di barat dijadiin pajangan, kalo disini udah jadi sakral
Wow that diamond is from my town haha
Its not stolen but..Robbery
All Colonialism country is thief.
_Belum semua kembali ke INDONÉSIA?!!_
It belongs to Claimland.
Please give it back.
Even tho they already sold it to the Dutch.
But they don’t remember they did sell it.
Can you proving??????
That’s keris nogo sostro
That manuscript is strangely similar to my Batak calendar, I can even read the part of the seasonal “snake” the part that tell when is the good time to plant crop, hunting and harvest crop…
More like taken not stolen
Return what Indonesia government wanted. It’s the right thing to do.
Uhh why my grandma have art from Dutch too. It was from 1907. I need an explanation here
My Yemen Ancestors Who migrated to Indonesia also have a old Ducth table. He bought it from an Ambonese people who had worked with Dutch people
And maybe the table is already hundreds of years old but the table is really still sturdy. The table is also made of high quality teak wood😂
@el I was tryna to sell the artwork but the collector said that it’s need a several document and the painter must be found. How do I suppose to know the document when my grandpa is already passed away??! It’s really hard to track omg…
as Indonesian its good decision to take things that are important to keep, because we want to make museum not warehouse, and other not important let Dutch museum to keep
The Indonesians cannot even protect their own heritage… why are they calling back these artifacts that they wont be able to protect?
at that time they stole our freedom
maling
Malaysian government also needs to demand the return of our lost history in the forms of history books being held by countries in their library’s higher security section around the world!
I really hope if the artifacts are really returned, Indonesian government will preserved these historic goods and starts loving them. I’m an Indonesian, some of the museum outside Java/Bali is in a bad condition. I don’t want it to be returned just to be broken in its original place
VOC is a trading company with the largest wealth in history, far above Apple etc. Can you imagine how big is Indonesia’s artifacts stolen in 350 years?
Look it’s anya
A Robbery We Can Never Forgive 😡
🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
They don’t want all those items back because allow of them show the original people were of African descent. Real Talk!
I don’t want stolen goods and money be returned to conquered countries by colonists cuz then all the western countries and America would become bankrupt pretty quickly .
V interesting, 🌹🌹
So nice 🌹🌹🌹
Stay connected 🌹
Welcome my 🏠🏡
Keris is a weapon from Indonesian and i like
Reading book About Indonesian
Oh i from 🇮🇩 hi everyone
Ok as an Indonesian and someone who is studying art at uni I do agree that everything needs to be returned BUT we have to do it slowly and carefully. Personally, I think a lot of these artifacts shouldn’t just be returned to Indonesia (ie in some museum in Jakarta) but from the exact region it was stolen from, which could be a logistical issue. Some of these artifacts are very fragile and if not stored properly might break, so for now I think they should remain with the Dutch government until the specific region the artifacts were taken from can properly maintain them rather than them deteriorating or being damaged over time. Sadly I don’t believe it’s in the governments interest right now, but hey that’s just my opinion
the same should be done by Germany, Russia and Sweden for Poland – hundreds of years of ocupation, wars and invasions.
1:26 ahh yess progamer move achievement
Aslamu alaikum subscribe
Why did they show a Benin bronze sculpture as the video tag, that’s a Nigerian Bini artifact, not an Indonesian one.
it was a meteorite stone, it wasnt from this earth
the video is okay to add insight.
……..
The Dutch have taken a lot of treasures from Atlantis, they know very well that Indonesia is a rich and beautiful country, just imagine a small Brunei like that a rich country, let alone Indonesia?
In india we call Britain as chor bazaar ( thief Market) , if you want to understand British people look at their queen , she wears a stolen gem from india, that’s the moral stature of British people
In honesty, appreciating others artifacts while calling them uncivilized is the most European thing ever.
Hey Indonesian historians! Why don’t you push to repatriate all the mixed INDO people, like my family, that you exiled for not being full blood? Holland had the decency to take them in when you forced them to leave under threat of death. You don’t deserve any artifacts back until you repatriate the other Indo people you exiled for stupid nationalist reasons after you sided with the Japanese fascists.
Turn back our stuff!! Hey Netherlands small and rubish country
If you visit ”Galeri Nasional” in JKT, you will see many paintings which were made by Dutch/Indo-Dutch painter, after the Independence their descendants moved to Holland. Now, should Indonesia return these paintings as well?
What i try to say is that it works both ways, we have a shared history and need to live with that.
compared to other former colonies, the Netherlands and Indonesia have a very good relation.
Al jazeera tries (as always) to spread anti-western sentiments.
Javanese want our manuscript back please, it’s not just a book it is idk how to tell but it’s different than you think. Our people star to losing our true self 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
In the same way Uk stolen lots of Ancient Indian artifact’s . I appeal from colonizers return our artifact’s before it’s to late .
This topic has been in talk for years and years after Indonesian Independence Day. My sibling works for a museum and she says it’s hard to attain artefacts and regalia from Netherlands and UK. (part of this due to white supremacy lol) They’re still trying to get artifacts as many as they can. It’s sad to learn that some artifacts end up in auction house -illegally. Some were in private possession, left untouched in warehouse, or even attic? Because the descendants of the ‘owner’ didn’t what to do with their granpa or great granpa’s collections. Some were left untouched in museum warehouse and received poor treatment. Who knows how many Indonesian manuscripts or artifacts already broken/ irreparable in Europe?
Anyway..what we saw today on the news..is not the whole stuffs. I hope the government will get the ancient jewelries and regalia as many as they can. Those item are priceless and extremely beautiful.
A bit mixed feeling about this issue. Stolen goods should be returned to their rightful owner but how long do you go back. Almost any powerful country from Egypt in the past to present day powers have appropriated stuff from conquered territory. Also the Netherlands has a past time connection to the Indonesia and the museum is to show the culture.
They probably will make a copy of it and only “return” fake copies. lol
West Papua seeks the return of Artifacts, precious minerals and land stolen by the Indonesians.
Please return it my friend!!! You have moral obligation to return something which is not yours. Beside you have shed our ancestor blood for it and simply not yours.
Netherlands The nation of thieves🥱
Thanks for Dutch , for its 350 Years of Colonialism in Indonesia, it taught us about the militant spirit in everyone. freedom or death!
For uncultured people see this as trash, the return of kris mean the sign of war, they have no knowledge about this
British can conquer china but don’t misunderstand, at that time was not han ruled dynasty, the one who will is us inshaallah
I’m astonished by the keris 👀
Beautiful
NOT A KOLONIAL COLLECTION…. BUT PROFFESIONAL THIEFT COLLECTION
Dutch British Spanish Portuguese america all looters gave back our artifacts colonialists
We will take it back, one way or another
@Al Jazeera English – Lets get something straight. I can tell by the way your narrator talks, that she ISN’T Dutch, Indonesian, or “Indo” . Secondly, the Dutch didn’t “take” anything. It was called trading, and that part of life has been going on for hundreds, if not thousands of years! One country travels via ship with goods from their land, introduces it to another country, and trades are made. Plain and simple
If you asked me we should keep everything and give nothinf back. Johnny dep law!
Waarom moet ik in Nederland betalen voor kruiden die ze zelf hebben gestolen in Indonesië ????
