Thailand sends aid to Myanmar as violence eases near border

Aid is being sent from Thailand to people displaced by fighting in Myanmar after violence eased near the border in the past two days. But ethnic Karen fighters in Myanmar say they will only negotiate a ceasefire if Myanmar’s military leaves areas where fierce fighting has been taking place. The Karen National Union (KNU) said the area under its control in Karen state was hit last week by air raids and artillery rounds. Myanmar military reverts to scorched earth tactics, massacres

The spokesperson for the National Unity Government of Myanmar is accusing the military in northwest Myanmar of carrying out massacres of civilians and destroying their homes. The destruction in the hilltop town of Thantlang, in Chin State, northwestern Myanmar, caused by artillery shells and fires set by Myanmar’s military, appears part of a concerted policy of scorched earth. Clashes between Myanmar military and ethnic fighters continue

The fighting between government forces and ethnic Karen armed groups have forced thousands of refugees to escape over the border into Thailand. The fighters for independence are facing a fully equipped modern army with heavy artillery and air support. And despite being outgunned, the morale of Karen fighters appears to be high. The Thai military is now considerably more relaxed, and the fighting appears to have moved away. But they are still monitoring very closely, watching anyone who goes up to the border. Pakistanis suffer as inflation rises, economy worsens

The International Monetary Fund earlier this week said it had agreed with Islamabad on measures needed to reive a stalled $6bn funding programme for Pakistan where inflation reached more than 9 percent in October. Myanmar protesters rally as Thailand slams military crackdown

Activists in Myanmar have burned copies of a military-framed constitution in protest against Senior General Min Aung Hlaing’s power grab, as neighbouring Thailand expressed “grave” concern over the security forces’ escalating crackdown on anti-coup protesters. People again took to the streets of cities across Myanmar on Thursday, defying a security force clampdown that has killed at least 535 people since February 1 when the military deposed Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government.
