Moscow has abandoned its main bastion in northeastern Ukraine, in a sudden collapse of one of the war’s principal front lines after Ukrainian forces made a rapid advance.
The swift fall of Izyum in Kharkiv province on Saturday was Moscow’s worst defeat since its troops were forced back from the capital Kyiv in March.

You must have mixed up Kharkiv (in the north) and Kherson (in the south). Ukraine has been saying for a couple of months that it is preparing a counterattack on Kherson.
Would you want to be the one delivering bad news up the chain of command in Russia, plenty of open hospital windows there I hear. But in all seriousness this is mostly why, the Russian army doesn’t make fluid decisions on the ground, instead waiting on orders from HQ. So it is slow to react, especially when people are scared to deliver bad news up the chain of command for fear of repercussions due to scapegoating.
