Even though the term “Quiet Quitting” has existed for well over a decade…the RECENT trajectory is all thanks to a viral TikTok, which summarized that – even though you’re not outright QUITTING YOUR JOB – you’re quitting the idea of going “above and beyond.” You’re still performing your duties, but you’re no longer subscribing to the “hustle culture mentality” that work has to be your life – and that, your worth is not defined by your productive output.
However, the reality is: “acting your wage” will come at the cost that – long term, you’ll likely have a much harder time getting a promotion, working up to new opportunities, or even keeping your job – IF that’s something you value.
If you’re the type who WANTS recognition, who WANTS to grow within their career, and WANTS to eventually make more money…it’s often BETTER to give a LITTLE MORE than expected, and by doing so – you make a lasting impact that sets you apart from the competition.
In addition to that, it also serves as your safety net in the event we DO enter a severe recession with mass layoffs…because, like it or not…throughout recessions, we tend to see a COMPLETE contraction across the entire economy, including job losses.
I would take this EXTREMELY SERIOUSLY…because, even though it’s easy to “quietly quit” while unemployment is at an all time low, since 1955 “the U.S. economy has always experienced a recession within two years from every quarter in which inflation was above 4% and unemployment was below 5%, as they are today.”….and, on top of that…the unemployment rate has NEVER held below 3.5% for more than a year.
From my perspective, it’s totally okay to set boundaries in terms of your work/life balance…but, it shouldn’t be surprising if someone else gets the promotion, or a better opportunity – and that needs to be factored in, at least to SOME degree.
Of course, on the flip side: employers can’t simply expect their employees to keep 1-upping each other for a raise that doesn’t match inflation – plus, I’m sure it’s also demotivating to see the person who slacks off, getting paid the same as the person who takes on extra work, so, companies NEED to cultivate an environment where there CAN be incentives along the way.
Now, as far as what YOU could do about it: honestly, if you’re the type who’s happy with what they’re doing, self-motivated, and has a clear path for what you want, this is an opportunity to stand out in the workplace, and solidify yourself as someone who indispensable for the company. It could also be a great time to look for other work that’s more personally fulfilling, or – creates a better environment for what YOU want out of life.

I support this movement as a warehouse worker….but if you DO get a really good employer it’s fair to work and learn more than youre current position, for a promotion
Ngl I expected a one-sided view, but this was actually very informed and honest.
You got lucky. For every Graham Stephan there’s a Louis rossman who’s mom commits suicide and blames him.
I just quiet quit… Wasn’t paid what deserved so got a job that paid $15 more
Ppl need motivational speakers and idols that give people hope. Personally I used Andrew tates work ideology to work harder and I’m getting closer to my goals
My store just had managers no longer work on Sundays. So now staff has to do their jobs on Sundays from angry customers, checklists, and dealing with customers.
It’s simple….. You want more work?…. Here’s a novel idea, pay more and take less vacations…..
To valuable to production anyone?
What about making our own jobs that pays the amount we work.
While under a different name (Bailan/Tangping) Quiet Quitting is the big trend with college graduates in China ove the past few years.
The area I live in, people are just freaking lazy, lack work ethic or act entitled. I feel like that’s more prevalent than actual people that want to work.
I would work my ass off if it had a payoff I work my ass off just to survive
Question for you: I am in a position with opportunity for growth and promotion but an constantly berated and belittled by my boss. He makes me want to do the bare minimum rather than continue learning like I used to want. If I have to continue working under him I would rather be broke. Is quiet quitting wrong?
I’m about to quit my job next month. I’m ready to be gone from this hellhole.
My job is reconstructing the faces of early hominids
I mostly work with Pleistocene 🤣
Yeah besides oncall I’m not working more than 40 hours a week and no weekend work.
hmm thought this was normal
Why work harder for someone else, when it rarely pays off. I can work hard or not at all, for myself. Take off when Ibwant to and earn more money because I work harder. I have control of my life…not padding someone else’s pocket with my life.
grind myself into the dirt during my last 10ish good years. nope
This must be the reason why amazon stopped paying more to new employees and started paying attention to the employees who’s been there longer. They even raised everyone’s pay.
I just realized I was quite quitting without even noticing. I didn’t even know it was a thing before today.
There’s no incentive.
watching this as i was wanting to quit
I’m certainly a hard worker, just not at my job. I do what is expected of me and a little more to make it seem like I am motivated and will be given recommendations and such. That little bit of extra work still gives me benefits however any more won’t do anything. I then spend a good chunk of time outside of work (or in some cases during work hours) I study and practice and get better and other things making me build my skills and not feel burnt out. I make a salary and can work on either my career or on other side projects and feel fulfilled.
How hard is it to grasp. GIVE US AN ACTUAL SALARY AND RIGHTS and WE WILL WORK
I simply disagree with your first downside (maybe from a perspective as a worker) as you said before employers are looking to get the most for the least so why would they pay for the “passion” not to mention my experience given its anecdotal, promotion is rarer than ever new hire opportunities are more beneficial.
Thank you . Great information!
It didn’t start from TikTok. That’s all I don’t agree with.
“Quiet quitting” aka doing your job according to your contract of employment
you all starting to notice how upside down the working in the usa is 😂 it’s a joke
Working harder is rewarded with more work and equal pay to what you started with and or less pay while never getting promoted and being expected to work harder because of you can.
This is crazy. When did it become normal to go ‘above and beyond’? I thought that doing your job was the whole part of work. Doing your job ‘at bare minimum’ is just called ‘doing your job’. No one is quitting anything. This is just another ‘title’ for folks who want more of a blend between work and life. Admirable but silly and misleading categorization. Why do we have to categorize everything?
26 mins searching for other jobs.. Definitely have done that 🙃😆😆
Anyone who goes above&beyond for no extra pay is a sucka
Work ethic has died, and the blood is in the hands those who are lazy as s***.
Why not start your own business?
Your reward for hard work is usually just more work.
Why should I is employee want to do more than the bare minimum when my employer does not want to pay me more than the bare minimum. Employers have made it abundantly clear how much the value our labor and so now they get their moneys worth
Never work hard for another company. Problem is the harder you work the more work is going to come on your way. Especially in North America, you are paid hourly so if you tell your boss you finished the work they will magically manage to find you more work. They never say you deserved to go home or increase in salary or earned a vacation etc.
The problem is, people still go above and beyond and exceed expectations and still don’t get compensated. You have you force their hand, otherwise nothing happens.
Can we stop calling it quiet quitting and call it what it is, acting your wage. If a company wants more work then pay more. I’ve gone above and beyond and had to quit to be rewarded so I’d say it’s proven that there’s no benefit
I am QUIET QUITTING on life. That’s called winning.
The sponsors probably were afraid you would quietly quit the deal
I think a lot of people regardless of what job they have just don’t want to give up 40 hours minimum of their week to barely be able to make it by. Some people just want to make enough money to enjoy life outside of work and either have to work way too many hours to achieve the life they want and not having the time to enjoy it or not do that and not have enough money to live comfortably. A lot of it has to do with modern day slavery… The hustle mindset isnt for everyone some people just want to live and not work their life away. That being said I’m a laborer and that’s just my perspective on it.
If you are going to quit, please just actually quit. Don’t make all of us that are still trying make things better at work miserable.
For me, the economy is getting so bad and during it my job is reducing hours and keeping the same minimum wage pay. This means less money, more work because we are purposefully under staffed, and that has destroyed the great mood of the workplace.
Along with that many of us our expected to have multiple jobs and unhealthy work hours just to get by.
Oh also, right now people are also realizing that upwards mobility in their companies is unachievable due to work place politics, so if we’re not going anywhere working hard, might as well do less of the same outcome
Guess they are similar to ” lying down or let it rot” movement in china?
I worked for a company that once their manager hit 30 years of service they would get a large bump in pay and a big retirement bonus. O ly problem was that every time a manager would get close they’d start digging up any dirt and fire them. Screw these employers man, they deserve this. Even though I still go above and beyond because that’s how I was raised I don’t blame people for doing the bare minimum
Your personal experience is greatly flawed simply because real estate agents are not paid hourly or salary. The people youre trying to impress are the customers directly. You get paid by the job. So the occasional pro-bono work makes sense. If you were hourly or salary, youd be more likely to quiet quit. Its the same paycheck regardless and the more labor you produce in an hour, the less likely they want to promote you because youre already are giving the company more bang for their buck. The vast majority of people are making hourly wages. Few jobs actually pay based off of actual production.
What’s wild was at my previous job, I was doing what was required of me and proceeded to do stuff above my pay grade. Because my boss kept putting me in a higher paid position without giving me a full raise. My “bare minimum” was way better than most of the people working there. I eventually quit because the boss was acting smart with me. I definitely don’t regret my decision. I get paid more for doing less.
I started a new job last year. Within a month, the team I had, half of them quit within in the first month. Now, as a school custodian, I’m use to people coming and going. But, I was completely unprepared that we couldn’t get replacements. I had to do more for the same pay as someone who was doing less. To add insult to injury, whenever there was a problem, I would get blamed for it. I’m so glad I got out of that situation. I’m much happier now. But, going above and beyond didn’t work out for me. I just play the game of doing enough and help when I can. There are no incentives for me.
It’s amazing how people have been doing this, but we have to have a name for everything… Also, so many people have quiet quit without even knowing it.
Watching this video at work
I’ve been quietly quitting for all my life 😂😂 just do whatever have to do and go home.
Is that what’s called? “Quiet quitting”? I’ve been doing it for years… Dang, we’ve been found out. Social media man, been flying under the radar, now the secret is out 😒
hourly wages honestly incentivize you to be distracted
Colossians 3:23-24
“23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Maybe your boss overlooks your hard work, but God doesn’t.
None of this quiet quitting crap. Work what you’re worth and not a dollar more.
Yea I need money everyone does, but can’t spend money when your dead gotta take of your self because, they are and won’t think twice about doing what’s best for them.
Competitive pay isn’t competitive pay, it’s stay longer to get paid more.😂 More like competitive contracts cause you have to negotiate, if they even negotiate pay. Only a few jobs actually promote the best worker. Even then, they rather not because that person was setting the bar for everyone else.
People are sick and tired of making other people rich with OUR FOOKING LABOR and getting treated like fooking slaves.
75% go above and beyond??? I call BS
Company: this is what’s expected of you *pays the least wage possible for the position*
You: Does the minimum of what’s expected for your position
Company: WHY IS THIS PERSON ONLY DOING THE BARE MININUM!?🙄
Gee…well maybe cus you pay them for the bare minimum so they DO the bare minimum?
It ain’t rocket science, don’t break yourself if a company doesn’t even value you.
Having a job is getting expensive 😬
That’s funny dude this is been going on for decades what’s really happening are the people like me aren’t carrying these people anymore so they’ve always been quite quit but now we are not doing their job
Of course we have no savings dude are you kidding me why will we quit for a better wages if we could save money and invest out of your mind dude
Lol this is literally 90% of people an defiantly isn’t new
it’s always a good idea to make yourself stand out for good reasons i think. i mean sure if you don’t have the drive to go above and beyond, that’s ok. i’m just saying i’m at 2.5x my starting wage and about to get a promotion that comes with more money (ear marked for it anyway). job hoping might be all you can do to make it but if you stand out among your peers, it can also be an option. of course this doesn’t come without sacrifices.. i’ve worked whatever they need me to. studied on my own time, worked harder than anyone i’ve ever seen in there (setting records) and have been known to come back in and problem solve for the other shift. i’ve also worked sick and injured.. worked all the way through covid despite being “high risk”. turned down vacation time even because i was needed. i even didn’t take the bait of a blank check to go to the other shift (need an operator that could fix things). no kidding that actually happened. it’s not easy or a path for most people i’ll grant ya. now i’ll likely end up on the other shift but on my terms, as a supervisor. shouldn’t have to do that to get that far but when politics usually dictates who gets those roles… i’m not in the boys club though and have no real desire to be. i do like money though and when it’s all over and done with in a few years, i’ll be looking at starting my own thing. right now though i’m just acquiring skills and they’re paying me very well to learn. then again these videos make me think what i could do with with a chunk of money rather than a cnc machine. i really like what i do though.
I have a solution PAY YOUR EMPLOYEES MORE big heads in corporate already have sevral houses and a yacht
ill quit my job when i win the lottery or unless i get to the point to retire
Keep slacking, more $$$ for me!
Why should people keep working jobs that don’t pay the bills? Landlords and housing market megacorps are destroying the bottom class. Soon homelessness will explode and society will feel the aches of capitalism in its terminal stage. I’m a little worried :/
if you work at like some kind of factory you gotta do the bare minimum, unless you want overtime opportunities lmao
Pizza Party ain’t cutting it anymore🍕
Very good video
If you want me to go above and beyond you gonna have to pay me above and beyond
The (labor) market has spoken
Your cookie analogy can also be applied to the employer. If they offer competitive salary, good benefits, work from home, penions and other perks, employees are more likely to stay there longer and be drawn in from other businesses.
9:56 this is me
I hate working at most jobs
They don’t bring me fulfillment or happiness but I need the money so i stay and try to push thru
I get depressed whenever I have to clock in
I never want to be there
This used to be me.
As soon as I leave the door at 17:00PM I put the work phone on flight mode. I only turn it back on at 09:00AM when I walk through the doors of my workplace.
Even if my boss calls, texts me on my personal phone I ignore it all as I don’t get paid for anything outside my work hours , the work and running around and heavy lifting I do alone is enough.
I’m not going above and beyond for anyone else. If you want more work done. Pay me more .
THIS IS A GOOD THING. I’m definitely not going to be a slave to this stupid ass government or these higher-ups
I barely get 20 hours a week working a dg as a full time employee
This is such propaganda.
I did the bare minimum for two days, then actually quit because I could not tolerate just standing around doing nothing. not to mention my boss was a jerk and all of the management disliked me because I wanted to work instead of doing drugs with them
office politics and favoritism will always out due overperforming and going “above and beyond”. Quiet quitting is the best way forward because merit is meaningless if the people above you don’t like you. Simple.
The prices of everything needs to go up more so people feel the need to go back to work. At the end of the day businesses and government runs with people I know this is a unpopular belief but it’s the truth
working the amount for the pay you get….imagine that…. not workign as hard as you can to exhaustion… what a concept
why are YOU talking about relations with employers and what they value…?? you have never worked for someone else!!!
I have no incentive to overwork myself at my current job. I have seniority and get priority for the most part regarding PTO requests.
I’m not interested in a promotion since managers are overworked and their job not worth it for me. I am interested in saving my energy for my second job (see 4-5 patients with private insurance) that I love and to focus my energy on starting my private practice providing psychotherapy. At my current job, I give all my energy to my clients but pleasing providers and management are the least of my priorities.
Several decades ago I did a “quiet quit”. It was only once and was a mistake.
You should always do your best for your clients, your company, your colleagues.
I respect you for your comments here, Graham. Well said.
My wife worked 21 days straight and is salary based only… Oh yeah, and she has built up a maximum amount of vacation days (which means she can no longer accumulate additional vacation days, even though she is supposed to add time every month and worked 21 days straight which does not include all the other weekends she would work and the management would still complain if she has a doctors appointment) , that was months ago.
I want to quit where I work the managers don’t give us enough hours they don’t pay people enough, they just working us to death that’s why we loosing so many people.
Same my family members know that
I’d argue that there was no “great regret”. That was only something employers fabricated to scare people into keeping their jobs.
I’ve been quite quitting for the past 20yrs! I learned how to “sham” during my time in the army and I’ve been applying my shamming principles in the private sector.
I agree to this 60 percent
There’s more coming. It took me two years but now I’m in a position to retire 15 years early.
Go Galt!
NFTs??? Seriously?? No wonder why you’re begging for subs…
Jesus this video is full of flash bangs, big white screens that came out of nowhere
A lot of employers in the U.S. are nothing more than wage thieves.
