Peru’s Defence Minister has declared a state of emergency on highways and called in the military to protect key infrastructure.
The move aims to stop blockades set up by protesters angry about the removal of the former president.
They want Pedro Castillo freed from jail. He is accused of an attempted coup and was arrested last week.
At least seven people have been killed in the unrest.

Blaming Castillo for not being democratic, locking him up and then preceed to deploy police against protestors even killing some.
@Michael Wang there are many small parties and no large one’s making opposition ridiculously strong and gathering support near impossible and the people have lost trust in the parties (according to theconversation)
Also he apparently considering granting Bolivia (a landlocked poor country) access to the Pacific Ocean which made others accuse him of “treason” apparently.
@Michael Wang and (according to theguardian) Peru has announced a state of emergency in which the right of movement and gathering has been suspended. That decision was made due to people protesting for Castillo which escalated into violence.
In other words protests are basically illegal now.
Police can now search people’s homes without permission or judicial order, while there is also a possibility of nightly curfew.
And that is done by the police with the help or armed forces.
That was made since the protestors demanded that all lawmakers should be replaced and Castillo should be reinstated.
And protestors aren’t happy with elections being first in December 2023, which is an entire year from now.

For left-leaning nations which include Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Bolivia signed a joint statement which declares Castillo as “a victim of undemocratic harassment”.
Also protestors demand immediate elections.
@Jonas Arnesen I don’t think he knows he didn’t have their support – since technically he was the highest level commander. He made his announcement to dissolve the congress BEFORE the military declare their stance. This is one of the main reasons why e.g Beijing’s Xi end up annexing most of the senior officials with royalists even if less than a handful have any combat experience. They might suck in battle and reduce a nation’s strength but at least they won’t turn on the dictator that may lead the country to war.
@Jonas Arnesen I don’t know any of his ideas – where any of it really good (with transparent accounting) – it is however his idea as big as a political coup (try to dissolve the entire parliament where he himself will form a new “temporary” one during the crisis that drives the alarm bell and reached other global media.
Indeed it is almost unthinkable for an elected official would try to reject the parliament which is also elected by the people ~ so he can get all his idea accepted by creating an internal ‘yes-sir” circle/parliament. It might be good for his supporter to ask him “who give him that idea” :3

The vast majority of the congress united to oust the Ex-president who try to dissolve the congress so if they didn’t manage to stop him there and there; we might be seeing a strong-arm dictatorship T___T.
