Chile ex-president Sebastian Pinera dies in helicopter crash

Chile’s former President Sebastian Pinera, a billionaire tycoon who twice held the South American nation’s top job, has died in a helicopter crash on Tuesday, his office said in a statement. It’s believed he was flying himself and three other passengers. The government has declared two days of national mourning for the 74-year-old who was president twice. While some Chileans remember him as a leader who improved the economy and led the country during the unprecedented rescue of trapped miners, others call him a murderer and accuse him of human rights violations against demonstrators during his second presidency. Funeral in US for Palestinian-American boy killed in suspected hate crime

Mourners in the United States have gathered to honour Wadea Al-Fayoume, a six-year-old boy stabbed to death by a man police say targeted him and his mother because they were Muslim and Palestinian Americans. The funeral took place on Monday at the Mosque Foundation in Bridgeview, Illinois, a community southwest of Chicago with a large Palestinian population. Haiti violence: Several killed as gang open fire on protesters

Mexico investigating soldiers involved in ‘execution’ of five men

Mexican prosecutors are investigating what President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called the “execution” of five men in an incident that has sparked outrage from human rights observers. Media outlets released a video on Tuesday, appearing to show a group of soldiers pulling the men from a crashed pick-up truck in Nuevo Laredo, a border city in the state of Tamaulipas. Haiti gang suspects stoned, burned by mob

More than a dozen suspected gang members in Haiti were lynched and their bodies set on fire by residents in the capital Port-au-Prince, police and witnesses said, as the United Nations warned that insecurity in the city had “reached levels comparable to countries in armed conflict”. Two Americans dead, one injured in Mexico kidnapping: Official

Two of the four US citizens kidnapped after crossing over the border into northeastern Mexico have been found dead, a senior Mexican official has said. The attorney general’s office confirmed that of the four abductees “two of them are dead, one person is injured and the other is alive”, Tamaulipas state governor Americo Villarreal told the Mexican president by telephone at a news conference Tuesday. Peru declares nationwide state of emergency as crisis deepens

Peru has declared a nationwide state of emergency, amid a week of protest and political upheaval following the removal and detention of former President Pedro Castillo. Peruvian defence minister Alberto Otarola announced the new 30-day measure, which he said involved “the suspension of freedom of movement and assembly” and could include a curfew, on Wednesday due to “acts of vandalism and violence”, including roadblocks. “The National Police with the support of the Armed Forces will ensure the control throughout the national territory of personal property and, above all, strategic infrastructure and the safety and wellbeing of all Peruvians,” the minister said.
