A scramble for scarce land in Nigeria is pushing millions of people into poverty, according to activists.
In 2018 Nigeria overtook India as the country with the largest number of people living in extreme poverty.
Experts say it is largely because of corruption, land confiscations and the manner in which resources are distributed.

@Marcus F In the case of Nigeria, Nigeria was created by the colonists, prior to that, it was around 7 countries. The people who make up Nigeria are simply incompatible. Looking at fertility rates, literacy rates, and general gdp per capita. It looks like the problem Nigeria has is promoting development in the northern half. China had this issue in the past, however their strategy was to brute force education and infrastructure development across the interior and far western reaches of the country. It’s a pretty radical way of doing things and undermines “democracy” values of giving poor the right to suffer at their own demise and remain in perpetually primitive societies. However, as far as basic human rights (food, water, security, education, wealth) it’s a great way of achieving this.
This is always the contention the West has with China. The West believe that Tibetans and Uyghurs have a right to remain primitive and poor, a basic human right in Western Eyes. While China believes they have a right to live in a modern society, and that this can be done without compromising their old cultures. I see some compromise, however as far as humans go, they seem much happier with their acquired wealth.

48% of Nigerians live below the poverty line. It’s not just restricted to the north. It’s prevalent in the East, West and South. The problem of Nigeria are the elites and the everyday Nigerians who are fine with watching their neighbors suffer injustices as long as it doesn’t directly affect them. Nigeria cannot be outdone when it comes to corruption. I am currently experiencing it myself. I wanted to send a private package to Nigeria with UPS. It was stopped from Customs when it was imported to Nigeria. The recipient then received the message that he should first transfer money to a woman in order to receive my package. She gave her bank details and if he doesn’t pay my package will not be released. Absolute abuse of public office, that is Nigeria!
