Beloved comedian Cheech Marin donated what’s believed to be the largest private Chicano art collection in the world to a new museum in Riverside, California. NBC News’ Gadi Schwartz spoke with Cheech on the collection that reflects a community’s heritage.

Cheech is a renaissance man. I first realized that when I saw him on jeopardy. His collection of Chicano art is truly impressive. Then to donate so much for others to enjoy makes him a real treasure.

Why would any outsiders need to stereotype Chicano art when people like Marin do it for them? There is a commonality about these works that leaves little room for real exploration in the personal visions of individual artists. The woman at the end who comments on the “vibrant colors” is just one example of the self-imposed limitations on expression. Not all Hispanic artists want to paint Chicano style. Just like not all black artists want to fit any easy categorization. Maslow told us that self-actualized people learn to transcend the boundaries of their supposed cultures. Let’s let people find true expressions, not those they are expected to follow.
