A 24-year-old mountain biker from Otay Mesa, California, died after trying to help dehydrated hikers in an eastern San Diego valley, authorities say. KNSD’s Shandel Menezes reports.

Hiking in this heat is immature, irresponsible, negligent, and Egotistical.
@Mao Dong You don’t care about him or his family. Its just another chance to point and laugh at the dead guy.
@Jacob Nevison you don’t know me like that.
@Mao Dong You like your own comments thats all I need to know.
@Jacob Nevison liking comments promotes views and engagement for the channel that i follow. I’m responsible and i give back.
@Mao Dong How deranged are you exactly?
What is it about 100 degee weather that makes idiots want to go hike with no food or water? Poor biker didn’t deserve to die trying to help those fool’s!
I’m an avid cyclist but I’m been on my stationary bike throughout this heatwave.
I always hate those stories where it could have been prevented. 😖
Don’t go alone and bring a backpack of water. Stop dying.
Hiking in the heat takes common sense. If you don’t have common sense, don’t hike.
If they had common sense, they wouldn’t go hiking in the first god d@mn place!!! SMH!! The Irony….
Let it be a lesson for other adventurous people
this is just so messed up…
Who in their right mind decides to go hiking in triple digit heat?
Hiking can get addictive. When I’m in the southwest in the summer, I still hike, but I’m out there at sunup and back in the AC by 8 or 9 am. Coming from the east, I just don’t adjust to the time change and I’ve been fine even when the temps later in the day are over 110. Yes, lots of water and energy bars go with me on the trail, and a good book waiting for me for the rest of the day.
Without food or water. Smh.
People like adventure and are thrill seekers by nature. Risk takers if you will.
the city of phoenix
It can be done just fine, but you have to be prepared. I hiked to Delicate Arch when it was 104, BUT it was evening and temps were cooling down. And I had a ton of water and had just eaten a bunch of pasta for dinner.
I am used to the heat, I have very good condition and health, but sometimes, it gets around 124° here in California, and it is too hot even for me, I will go outside only if it is absolutely necessary, wearing proper clothing and water
Do you live in Death Valley or something? If so move. If you are in 125 degrees territory, you should move. Where I’m, it rarely goes above 100. Right now, its 85 so I can’t relate.
@aznlalaland in the Coachella Valley California (about 300 000 people in the summer) , we basically have all July and March at over 115°, this Friday it will be 120°, normally we get about 4 days per year at around 124°
Proper clothing or naked
Im in nyc rn at night its 72 cool throughout the day it could be 80-90’s on a hot day 100’s the most i’ve ever seen here unbearable was 110 i couldn’t take it
Hiking in 100°+ weather with no food or drink? Brilliant.
Now stupid can you be to have no water or food while hiking! Then the next person pays for your stupidity by helping. So sad may he rest in peace
Moral of the story….. leave them, let god sort it out
But what if they had gold?
Wow you’re pretty EVIL!
@DESSERT STAR Don’t be silly! They couldn’t drink the gold as the temperature was not quite hot enough! 🤪
Everyone should have to have a full cambelback with back and food before allowed to go on the trails
Good thinking. Maybe with all the taxes we pay it could fund giving supplies out. I’m more concerned about giving my $ to Ukraine though. 🤡
Right!!! Lets babysit grown a$$ adults that don’t exercise common sense and good judgment!! 👍
Who’s going to check their supplies? I mean, we cannot protect everyone from their own recklessness or stupidity.
@Julie Thompson We actually can protect everyone. The 1942 USDA film, *Hemp for Victory,* shows how.
“A dense and shady crop, hemp tends to choke out weeds. Here’s a Canada thistle that couldn’t stand the competition, dead as a dodo.”
This isn’t new information, it’s just new to most Americans because it’s been intentionally omitted from history books and public education in order to warp Americans’ minds into thinking that “Marijuana” is a dangerous threat to public safety.
Hemp grows tall just about everywhere, sometimes over 20 feet in just 4 months. This provides a natural shade cover. Hemp fibers make canvas. “The Conestoga wagons and prairie schooners of pioneer days were covered with hempen canvas. Indeed, the very word ‘canvas’ comes from the Arabic word for hemp.” – *Hemp for Victory,* USDA 1942
So, hemp provides shade when it’s growing, and then hemp can be turned into tents, backpacks, towels, etc., just as it did during World War II. Beyond that, hemp can also take in CO2 from the atmosphere and then be used to make all of our paper and plastic without petroleum or clearcutting forests, thereby reducing pollution, replacing fossil fuels, ending deforestation and stopping climate change so that it doesn’t keep getting hotter and hotter year after year.
The solution to saving the world is the 14-minute 1942 US Department of Agriculture video, *Hemp for Victory.*
This video has been online from the US National Archives for years. The same government that keeps Cannabis illegal put this film online for the whole world to see. It’s been public since 1990. We could have solved the problem by now if this were reported to the public, but the fossil fuel industry relies on Cannabis being illegal. They pay our government millions of dollars to keep it that way. That’s why *Hemp for Victory* isn’t taught in schools or shown on television.
As a fit 41 year cyclist and an ex road racer … if I were cycling in 95+ degree temps, I’d plan for 16 ounces every 30-45 minutes (minimum). It’s better to have extra at the end.
Also, carry a cellphone
16 ounces? That’s dealer amounts!
Some places don’t have good cell reception.
@Ml Brooks True! Carry a satellite communicator like the inReach mini.
Bike riding in 95 degree heat? No thanks
The irony.
So truly sad….
Remember that your body has an inner core temperature. It can easily rise, it has happened to me i got heat stroke. In worst cases it causes organ damage and leads to death. It creeps up on you, so you gotta act fast before its too late.
Allah is The King!
Nah bruh, you ain’t getting none of my water… better drink your pi$$😮
The Good die Young
…
Unfortunate story
Flipper the dolphin mentioned forget it, no worthyness, when you can exercise in pool
At this point even Darwin’s rolling in his grave… 🚰
Mountain
they are not even dressed properly for that heat. you have to dress like they do in the middle east. with hear that bad you need the best kind of protection possible.
Ooh gotta r… that hot firefighter guy so hot
🤓🖖
His bike was made of Carbon Fibre, enough said.
No common sense these days
And more soldiers keep marching in. R.I.P. HERO. stay safe, God bless. and i say this with the utmost respect.
“outmost”?
utmost
Thank you.
I am a firm believer in survival of the fittest… This world would be a lot less populated if we just let stupidity do its thing and stop saving people. Because those stupid people are going to breed and make more stupid people.
or don’t climb in the moutains dummies
Its not a good time to go on Hikes with this Heat!
The sun in Cali is different; the wearing of sunglasses isn’t a fashion trend. It’s like a mean little kid with a magnifying glass is sitting over you. Not from Cali originally, I took an outdoor beach job and sunburned my eyeballs twice before sunglasses became a constant companion. Dehydration is NO JOKE in that heat; requiring you to drink MORE than you actually want to. Alcohol makes it worse. The LAST thing you want to do is doze off in the sun. You need a beach umbrella. Shade is not a matter of preference, but a physical necessity. I was so sorry for all the tourists…and that was BEFORE this heat wave!
@Willi six california….
@Luna M THEN SAY THAT
@Willi six say that??…say what?…..say, i love snuggling with “your mom”???, thats strange…..why would i say that??
It’s 105 rn in texas and my eyeballs haven’t been burned before in my 31 years. What is burning your eyes
@James Guiberteau people with brown eyes more tolerant, blue or green more sensitive
So what tf happened to the guy? Why headline it with the guy’s death and then not bother to tell us what happened? 👎👎👎
a mountain biker ( mr a) helps a man dieing of heat person(mr b) by giving him all his water…..mr b lives….2 hours later mr a dies on his bike from heat exhastion!!
@Luna M There is nothing like that i this report
@Dora the Mystery Snail yep, 3 letter media is crap!!
@Luna M You’re not wrong, but most social media is worse.
People ignoring heat advisories and then not bringing enough water. Smh. I lived in Arizona for 15 years…tourists would try to get out for a hike in the desert at 11 a.m. and then need rescue. Locals know you do not do that nonsense. May he rest in peace.
That’s funny because I’ve seen plenty of stories on here about Arizona locals dying in the heat there. Complacency kills.
cell phones dont work in the wilderness!!
Wear light colored clothes. Wide hat or Foreign legion hat. Freeze your backup water pack overnight.
The title is clickbait
🙏🙏🙏🙏
Some folks just gotta learn the hard way. One more empty parking space is now available.
The story never really said how he died though. It says he just stopped to help.
Never ever underestimate nature, no matter the environment. Rule #1 for survival
Yeah i don’t know why people have been testing nature lately. There was a lady who died in the cold last winter when she went for a jog. There is a reason we used to be CAVE MEN.
More importantly, STOP. Think. Consider your next action very, very carefully. When you’re conserving calories and water, your first action might be the one that orchestrates your demise. DON’T BE STUPID, ANH? Use-a you brain, eh? Capisce? 💪😎✌️
0:26 People wearing dark shirts, pants, long sleeves, and no hats…. 🤦♂️
California is a desert not a forest
Why don’t they start putting CACHES out on the trail. Put them in strong metal boxes chained to trees. Water, protein bars, powerade, trail mix, couple small tarps you can buy at the Dollar Tree, a few medical supplies, bandaids, triple antibiotic ointment etc. If they are decent enough it should be take only what you need and replace what you take. Since you all are out enjoying the same activities it should be like a little community and help each other. God Bless you and yours. Please stay safe.
Maybe a mechanical vending machine?
Hike EARLY. Bring a LOT of water. Wear “sun” protective clothing. Actually hydrating regularly even if you don’t feel thirsty is a good thing. I am so sorry to hear about this person’s death. I cannot begin to tell you the “tourist” hikers I routinely pass with a small bottled water from the local convenience store and a plan to hike a trail with a 2,000 foot elevation gain–above treeline. People are unfortunately stupid and arrogant.
We talking about the real sun and actual human tourists or something figurative? 🤔
OR Don’t hike in the desert.
Just walk on your treadmill
Why do folks try to prove their manhood or toughness in extreme heat?? 🙄
Standard practice is that when it’s hot, take twice as much water as you think you need and if you can’t handle the weight you can’t go. Also, carry extra LMNT.
who hikes during a heatwave
They are too stupid to bring water?
so we know for sure he gave his stuff away and wasn’t robbed. That sure looks like an ugly miserable place for bike riding compared to our beautiful state of Mich where there are lakes, rivers, trees, wild flowers, etc, nothing like that barren land
You go for a hike or ride and you die because of heat and didn’t bring water?
Carry on 2023…
Moon man rider we salute you!
I’m not going to comment on the mountain biker, as it is tragic, but as someone who lives in the high desert in New Mexico, I see a lot of people (many out-of-state tourists) who are way under-prepared for the deserts and the mountains. I see people wandering around in both the wilderness and desert areas without maps, without water, etc. They think they’re at an amusement park. Many of these places have extreme weather fluctuations during the day and no cell phone reception. Respect the power of nature and come prepared. No one wants to see you get hurt or even die. I’ve lived here for over a decade and always bring the recommended amount of water plus more just in case. If you get hurt, lost, etc., you could be out there longer than planned, and I’d rather be over prepared than dead. Also, during heat waves, I only spend significant amounts of time outside in the early hours. Certainly not after noon.
Trail map apps such as Trailforks work without cell signal, fyi. As long as you’ve downloaded the trails in that state beforehand, of course. All they need is GPS.
why dumb people still go out under such high heat?!
how about closing the path, during a heatwave? it’s simpler than getting in harm’s way.
Let’s ban cars too… Thousands of people die in accidents every year.
Tragic… truly tragic.. but what’s more tragic is feeling glad to see this rather than freeway shootings on the news. #theBLMepidemic
Bring extra essentials especially water. Proceeds to show couple going on a hike and the girl the only one carrying a hydration pack.
Thousands of years on this planet and we still have to remind people that water is important to your survival. 🧐
This is why we will never get off this rock.
Says the butt hurt dork crying to nobody in the YouTube comment section. I can only imagine all the things you’ve done from your mother’s basement to change this world for the better 🤡
Blackrock climacommerce story.
Wish someone handed him some water
Darn, this is super sad.
Those first pictures look like Mission Trails within San Diego City, 00:08, while the Carrizo Gorge area is probably at 00:12 – there doesn’t look like there’s a trailhead, and it’s much drier, not a lot of greenery out there. The area where this happened is really in the boonies, most people couldn’t even get there, I’ve never been there. The old train from San Diego to Yuma used to go through there, and it’s such rough terrain they have never fixed the tracks to start it up again.
Don’t help people and don’t stop if you see someone who appears needing help. It’s never worth it and generally turns on the person helping.
Just stay home or go the beach.
Seems like Darwinism why would u be out there so dumb
So sad.
How can people be out so long..Iasted an hour in and out of my vehicle and close to home..so sad
Maybe they should make sure it wasn’t foul play..this is odd
Why would anybody go hiking in these temperatures?
Such a kind generous person, however call the reinforcement they drop in supplies with a drone.
Let’s go hiking in 100+ degree weather 💡💡💡💡
HIGH HUMIDITY, RECORD HEAT = let’s go out at peak heat and do vigorous exercising for hours with inadequate supplies. ..😑,, Darwin’s theory of evolution at work again
Plenty of places and things to do that doesn’t expose you to extreme heat.
That is both ironic and unfortunate. 😕
I’m not going out there with this heat lol
who mountain biking in 100 degree weather?
Camelback doesn’t help you! Water goes bad. Use a metal flask that can be dried out. No plastic in the heat. You can get plastic poisoning in your kidneys.
Please young people and old people and middle aged people, this heat is too hot for all of you, no matter age or fitness level. The only outdoor physical activity anyone should be doing in this heat is swimming. Just wait till the Temps fall some for hiking, biking, etc
Dude was just dying to go biking!
DO NOT go hiking in this heat!!! Please.
Where are you Gavin?! No public safety announcements? 😮😊
never be a hero cause you just might die
Him being 24 is all I needed to know.
24? Yep
Always bring more food & water than you think you’ll need, no matter the temperature. I get my rides started right at sunrise, even though it’s not getting THAT hot in Sun Valley, ID, I still prefer temps in the 50’s to 60’s while climbing. It’s just more comfortable, less sweating, easier to breathe. Used to live in Dallas and would ride in 100° plus temps. Kept rides shorter, and still went through 3 liters of water.
Also, advise people to just not do strenuous outdoor activity in this heat.
I would feel horrible if I was the people he helped. Their actions basically set up a series of events that lost this man his life for being a kind person.
Note to self : Drink all your water BEFORE you come across thirsty hikers.
Go mountain biking BY YOURSELF you are just asking for trouble. Just like with Scuba diving ANYTHING can happen.
This is why when i mountain bike in the summer time im riding by 530am. RIP to our fellow MB hero
Who hikes in a heat dome? Crazy.
This is just tragic. So sad. May God bring comfort to his family and friends.
PLEASE pay attention to the temperature. This heat is a killer.
I always bring twice the water I THINK I’ll need, and a lot of water to wear on head, clothes for cooling. Use thermal bottles, and have a reflective umbrella, or other quick shelter. Acclimatize over a few weeks, have a plan B and C. Drink water before you go out.
oh no! sun stroke. i cant take it even if i drink water. electrolytes are key
Only Mad Dogs & Englishmen Go In The Noonday Sun. What Are These Idiots Doing Out There In The Worst Heatwave They’ve Had? What A Bunch Of Dumbasses. Now A Man Is Dead For Trying To Help. The Heat Is Why Several of Them Are Dead. I Say If They Are Stupid Enough To Be Out There & Get Into Trouble, Too Bad Let em Save Their Own Bacon.
Why were any of them there in such heat?
