Chile has been marking the 50th anniversary of the violent coup against the elected socialist President Salvadore Allende, which brought General Augusto Pinochet to power.
Hundreds attended a memorial at the presidential palace in the capital Santiago to honour the thousands killed or forcibly disappeared under Pinochet’s rule.
Al Jazeera’s Latin America Editor Lucia Newman reports from Santiago.
