Russia is creating naval base in a breakaway region of Georgia on the Black Sea coast.
That’s according to the separatist leader there, who spoke to Russian media.
Moscow recognized Abkhazia as an independent state, after fighting a war with Georgia in 2008.
The region’s self-styled president says he’s signed a deal with Russia for a permanent base.
That’s as Ukraine expands its attacks on Russian-controlled Crimea. Kyiv’s targets last month included the Black Sea Fleet command headquarters in Sevastopol.

@Venxi I think Kremlin has security concerns, but they are not legitimate. Imagine, average yearly salary in Ingushetia is like $1,500. All the money are in Moscow. Russia isn’t afraid of the West, but they are afraid that their suppressed regions are inspired by the West. So they create eternal border conflicts. All of Russia’s oil and gas money goes straight into the Kremlin pockets.

Azerbaijan already demonstrated how decisive military action can rapidly collapse a breakaway region. I expect behind closed doors Georgia is discussing how it could do the same in the coming years.
