Russia reportedly signs deal to create naval base in Georgia’s separatist region of Abkhazia

Russia is creating naval base in a breakaway region of Georgia on the Black Sea coast. That’s according to the separatist leader there, who spoke to Russian media. Moscow recognized Abkhazia as an independent state, after fighting a war with Georgia in 2008. The region’s self-styled president says he’s signed a deal with Russia for a permanent base. That’s as Ukraine expands its attacks on Russian-controlled Crimea. Kyiv’s targets last month included the Black Sea Fleet command headquarters in Sevastopol. Let’s get more on this from Yulia Shapovalova who’s live in Moscow. Ukraine imposes state of emergency, summons citizens home

Ukraine has imposed a state of emergency and told its citizens in Russia to leave immediately, as Moscow began evacuating its Kyiv embassy in the latest ominous signs of an all-out Russian military onslaught. Shelling intensified on Wednesday at the line of contact in eastern Ukraine, where Russian President Vladimir Putin recognised the independence of two Moscow-backed rebel regions this week and where he has ordered the deployment of Russian troops as “peacekeepers”. Anxiety grows in eastern Ukraine as residents brace for Russian invasion

The regions in eastern Ukraine recognised by Russia as independent extend far beyond areas under rebel control. This is creating more uncertainty for those living near the frontline of the country’s long-running separatist conflict. With the Minsk agreement now in tatters – Ukraine has declared Avdiivka and other towns and villages along the frontline, restricted areas. Al Jazeera’s Hoda Abdel-Hamid reports from Avdiivka, one of the frontline towns in eastern Ukraine, where the threat of invasion is now exposing social divides. – Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe – Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish – Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera – Check our website: https://www.aljazeera.com/ #RussiaUkraineTensions #UkraineCrisis #Donetsk

Several members of the United Nations Security Council have on Monday condemned Russia’s moves to escalate its crisis with Ukraine. Ukrainian soldiers in front lines report intensified shelling

Ukrainian government soldiers in front-line trenches in Ukraine’s east said on Monday that heavy shelling from Russian-backed separatists had intensified to provoke all-out conflict amid fears of Russia seeking a pretext for a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian troops have battled Russian-backed separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk breakaway regions bordering Russia since 2014. A ceasefire deal in 2015 halted the worst fighting, but shelling has intensified along the “line of contact” since last week as Russia masses forces along Ukraine’s borders. Putin recognises independence of Ukraine breakaway regions

Russian President Vlamidir Putin has signed the presidential decree recognising the independence of separatist regions in eastern Ukraine – a move that will severely ratchet up tensions with the West amid fears of a Russian invasion. Renewed conflict in Ukraine could trigger a food supply crisis

From a country that suffered one of the worst famine in history, Ukraine has become one of the major grain exporters in the world. Last year, it produced about 100 million tonnes of grain, and exported 75 percent of it. With tensions between Ukraine and Russia, there are fears that the cost of these exports may rise, or that they may not make it out of Ukraine at all. Any disruption would have a major impact on the global distribution and supply, already battered by the COVID pandemic. US will designate Qatar as major non-NATO ally, Biden tells emir

The United States is planning to designate Qatar as a major non-NATO ally, President Joe Biden has told Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, a move that would formally upgrade the partnership between Doha and Washington. During a meeting with Sheikh Tamim at the White House on Monday, Biden called Qatar a “good friend and reliable partner”. “I’m notifying Congress that I will designate Qatar as a major non-NATO ally to reflect the importance of our relationship; I think it’s long overdue,” Biden said from the Oval Office. The status would give Doha special economic and military privileges in its relationship with Washington. Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher reports […]
