Russia’s Kursk region sees fierce battles unfold – as Ukrainian soldiers expand their assault.
Kyiv claims to have seized more than a thousand square kilometres in the Kursk region and intends to continue its offensive despite Russia’s recent efforts to counter it. The incursion has led Moscow to evacuate at least 200,000 people, mobilise reserves, and impose a security lockdown.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Andrei Federov, a former Russian deputy foreign minister, described Ukraine’s incursion as a significant pressure tactic against Russia. He termed it a “shock” rather than an intelligence failure, attributing it to the extensive border with Ukraine and vulnerabilities exploited by Ukrainian forces. Federov added that driving Ukrainian forces out would be challenging due to the Sudzha metering station’s presence, which is crucial for Russian gas exports to Europe.

I believe the gas terminal was Ukraine’s initial objective, to hold it and threaten all gas exports to Europe if Russia counterattacked. However, their operation was so successful that UKR command had to take advantage and are now making quick strategic decisions day to day, while seeking to align with broader political objectives. If this is true, it’s an incredibly intense stage of the war, where things are developing much faster and decisions that will have enormous impact on the war must be made in hours or minutes. Should Ukraine push on into Russia and trigger a massive refugee crisis within Russia, but also risk becoming overstretched and vulnerable at home? Do you hunker down at current positions and wait for the Russians to redeploy from Donbass, and then counterattack at a weak spot in Donbass? Do you conduct an orderly retreat, destroying all infratructure and mining every inch of Russian territory, with intent to make it uninhabitable and impossible for Russia to traverse through quickly?

Ukraine’s latest advance puts russian progress over the last year into perspective. At the rate russia takes land it will be a long road to get Ukraine out of its territory. The settlements taken in Kursk for the most part look intact. I doubt they will remain that way when russia starts trying to recapture them.
