The U.K. will hold its general election on July 4, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced last week, after economic data showed a fall in inflation.
Regardless of the results, “it definitely will be a historic election,” said Hannah Bunting, lecturer in quantitative British politics at the University of Exeter.
The Labour Party would need a 12.7% swing in the vote to win a parliamentary majority — higher than that achieved by Tony Blair, who ousted John Major in 1997 on a wave of popularity — she said.
