Zambia elections: Debt crisis, unemployment main voter concerns

Zambia has more than $12bn in external debt and an unknown amount of debt to China. Last year, it became the first African state to default on its debt during the COVID pandemic. Candidates in upcoming presidential elections are all trying to convince voters they have what it takes to turn the economy around. But some economists warn against adding to Zambia’s debt load. China-Russia military drills: Exercises to focus on security in central Asia

China and Russia have begun a series of joint military drills in northeastern China that the two countries have described as a counterterrorism exercise. The five-day drills in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region are taking place just weeks before the US is due to complete its military pullout from Afghanistan, which borders China. China is concerned that Afghanistan could again be a staging ground for al-Qaeda. Beijing and Moscow have drawn closer as their ties with the United States have deteriorated. Zambia election violence: President deploys army ahead of polls

Zambia has deployed soldiers to contain political violence which has broken out ahead of Thursday’s general elections. Several people have been killed in recent weeks. There are 16 presidential candidates – but the main contenders are the incumbent – President Edgar Lungu and opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema – a businessman who has already made several unsuccessful presidential runs. Five years ago Lungu narrowly defeated Hichilema. The opposition alleged vote rigging and there was unrest. Many here worry that history will repeat itself. ‘Taxi war’ takes deadly toll in South Africa

In South Africa, the army has been deployed to Cape Town, as what’s being described as a “taxi war” continues to escalate. Dozens of people have been killed over the past few months, with rival taxi associations battling it out for ownership of a hotly contested route. Authorities have now closed the route, in a bid to restore calm. But thousands of commuters are bearing the brunt of the closure. Interim Haitian Prime Minister Claude Joseph to step down

Haiti’s acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph, whose leadership of the nation has been disputed since the July 7 assassination of President Jovenel Moise, told the Washington Post newspaper he will cede power Monday. Ariel Henry, who was appointed as prime minister by Moise two days before the assassination and who was recently recognised as the “designated prime minister” by the international community, will take over. South Africa vigilantes step in as rioters overwhelm police

A week after the arrest of former South African President Jacob Zuma triggered riots, community members and vigilantes have started working to protect properties and businesses from being looted. Thousands of soldiers have been deployed to help police, but law enforcement agencies still appear unable to stop attacks by rioters. The city of Durban has seen some of the worst violence. Looting has hit supply chains across South Africa, disrupting transport, services and manufacturing. Food, medicine and fuel supplies are running short. Death toll climbs as South Africa violence spirals

At least 70 people have died and more than 1,200 people have been arrested after days of riots and looting across South Africa. Protests began after former President Jacob Zuma turned himself in on July 7 to police to serve a jail term for contempt of court. South Africa has been under a COVID-19 lockdown for more than a year and the demonstrations have expanded to include concerns about increasing poverty and inequality. South Africa deploys army in two provinces to quell protests

South Africa’s military has been deployed after protests against the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma turned violent. At least six people have been killed and hundreds arrested in Zuma’s home province of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng province. Zuma is in prison for refusing to obey court orders to appear before a panel on investigating corruption during his time in office. Haiti: Wife of assassinated President Jovenel Moise speaks out

“I am alive, thanks to God,” Martine Moise, the wife of assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Moise, said in Creole in an audio message. “I am crying, it is true, but we cannot let the country lose its way,” she said. “We cannot let his blood … have been spilled in vain.” Haiti’s minister of culture and communications, Pradel Henriquez, confirmed to the AFP news agency that the audio was authentic. Haiti police say 4 suspects killed, 2 arrested in president killing

Authorities in Haiti say they have arrested two people in connection with the assassination of President Jovenel Moise. Four other suspects were killed in a gunfight with security forces. Moise was killed at his home early on Wednesday. His wife was injured and has been taken to the US for treatment.
