A week after the arrest of former South African President Jacob Zuma triggered riots, community members and vigilantes have started working to protect properties and businesses from being looted.
Thousands of soldiers have been deployed to help police, but law enforcement agencies still appear unable to stop attacks by rioters.
The city of Durban has seen some of the worst violence.
Looting has hit supply chains across South Africa, disrupting transport, services and manufacturing.
Food, medicine and fuel supplies are running short.

The good citizens of south africa are standing up, rich, poor, all races bonding together to stop the rioting! Amazing and sad! It difficult because 99% of the looters are just taking a chance, and no one will actually shoot them for that! And the looters are a very very small percent of the population, the homeless people are even working with other citizens and police agains this crime!
South Africa is full of predatory companies with ugly giant warehouses selling cheap Chinese goods that are enslaving the country to debt. With 36% unemployment and little opportunities, the government getting kickbacks from these vulture foreign companies and banks this was bound to happen. It’s not only blacks, there’s tons of whites who are in desperate poverty there.
