Death toll climbs as South Africa violence spirals

At least 70 people have died and more than 1,200 people have been arrested after days of riots and looting across South Africa. Protests began after former President Jacob Zuma turned himself in on July 7 to police to serve a jail term for contempt of court. South Africa has been under a COVID-19 lockdown for more than a year and the demonstrations have expanded to include concerns about increasing poverty and inequality. South Africa deploys army in two provinces to quell protests

South Africa’s military has been deployed after protests against the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma turned violent. At least six people have been killed and hundreds arrested in Zuma’s home province of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng province. Zuma is in prison for refusing to obey court orders to appear before a panel on investigating corruption during his time in office. Many Afghan civilians struggling to flee amid Taliban advances

Haiti gang leader ‘Barbacue’ threatens new violence

A former police officer turned notorious gang leader is asking his supporters to join mass protests in Haiti. Jimmy Cherizier, also known as “Barbecue”, launched a self-styled revolution against elites before President Moise’s assassination, but human rights groups argued that he was targeting the opposition. Haiti: Wife of assassinated President Jovenel Moise speaks out
