For three decades the Europa Hotel in Belfast hosted more journalists than tourists, survived 33 bombings by the Provisional Irish Republican Army and held the dubious honour of being Europe’s most bombed hotel. It was both a target and a reporters’ refuge during the bloody conflict in Northern Ireland in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. More than 200 people, mostly Palestinians, have been injured in clashes with Israeli police in occupied East Jerusalem. Violence broke out at the Al Aqsa Mosque and elsewhere in the city. Iraq and the United States have agreed on the withdrawal of all remaining US and coalition combat troops deployed to fight ISIL (ISIS) in the Middle Eastern country – but they did not provide a timeline and said the foreign forces would still provide training to the Iraqi army. Mozambique has turned to the European Union for help to stop attacks by ISIL-linked groups in its northern region. The president wants the EU to train its forces to battle armed groups which emerged three years ago in Cabo Delgado. Since then, the fighters have stepped up the violence, seizing important towns and targeting the military. The conflict has raised fears for stability and security in the surrounding region. The World Food Programme says more than 300,000 people have fled the violence.
