Afghanistan official shares government strategy against Taliban

Afghanistan’s interior minister has revealed to Al Jazeera the government’s plan to stop the Taliban. He said the government is throwing support behind local uprising movements and focusing on securing main highways, large cities and border crossings. UNSC discusses Ethiopia dam amid strained ties with Egypt, Sudan

Mali’s former coup leader takes power after president’s arrest

Mali’s interim vice president, Colonel Assimi Goita says he removed the transitional president and prime minister from power because they left him out of discussions to form a new government. Goïta says President Bah Ndaw and PM Moctar Ouane were trying to upend Mali’s democratic transition after they took charge of an interim government last August that deposed President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. The two leaders were taken to a military base outside Bamako on Monday. The UN, African Union and the European Union have condemned the move which has been described as an “attempted coup”. Mozambique army says town attacked by fighters is now secure

Mozambique’s army says it has retaken control of the northern town of Palma from a group of fighters linked to ISIL (ISIS) that attacked it last month. A military spokesman says a significant number of fighters were killed during the operation. ‘Barricaded’ Myanmar protesters leave after tense standoff

0 Police and security forces have allowed hundreds of protesters in Myanmar’s biggest city Yangon to leave after they hunkered down in one district in defiance of a weeks-long nightly curfew to protest the military government’s coup. It follows United Nations chief Antonio Guterres’ warning that security forces should show “maximum restraint” in dealing with the protesters.
