A prominent opposition figure in Uganda has been released on bail – and says he was tortured in detention. Presidential candidate Bobi Wine was arrested at a campaign rally on Wednesday and has been charged with breaking coronavirus restrictions. The arrest sparked protests and a violent crackdown – the police say at least 37 people were killed. Several people killed and dozens wounded in protests in Uganda, following the arrest of presidential candidate Bobi Wine. His supporters blocked roads and burned tyres in the capital, Kampala, prompting police to fire tear gas and bullets. Soldiers have opened fire on demonstrators gathered at a protest site in Lagos that has been the epicentre of widespread rallies against police brutality in Nigeria, according to several witnesses. DR Congo violence: Rights group says militia working with army

Human Rights Watch has released video it says shows fighters from a Congolese armed group beating civilians and getting support from the military. Shimiray Guidon is the leader of the group, the NDC-R which is accused of human rights abuses. Mozambique struggles with armed groups as 300,000 displaced

Mozambique has turned to the European Union for help to stop attacks by ISIL-linked groups in its northern region. The president wants the EU to train its forces to battle armed groups which emerged three years ago in Cabo Delgado. Since then, the fighters have stepped up the violence, seizing important towns and targeting the military. The conflict has raised fears for stability and security in the surrounding region. The World Food Programme says more than 300,000 people have fled the violence.
