Turmoil threatens Peru as Congress votes to impeach president

Peru’s Congress has voted to remove President Martin Vizcarra from office in an impeachment trial over corruption allegations. He is accused of accepting bribes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from companies that won public works contracts. The vote came during his second Congressional trial in less than two months but he denies all of the allegations against him. Vizcarra has popular public support because he introduced an anti-corruption drive in Peru. Super Typhoon Goni batters Philippines, one million evacuated

A super typhoon has barrelled into the eastern Philippines bringing “catastrophic” winds and intense rains as about a million people were evacuated in its projected path including in the capital, Manila, where the main international airport was ordered closed. Officials said at least seven people had been killed. Turkish president calls for sweeping boycott of French goods

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for a boycott of French goods following French President Emmanuel Macron’s call to fight “Islamic separatism” in France. Georgia bank robber escapes after hostages freed

Local media in Georgia say an armed man who held dozens of people at a bank in the west of the country has escaped. Police say they freed 43 hostages after a tense standoff that started on Wednesday. Purdue Pharma to pay $8.3bn, plead guilty to settle opioid probes

Purdue Pharma, which makes the powerful painkiller, OxyContin, is set to plead guilty to criminal charges as part of an $8.3bn settlement for helping trigger an opioid crisis in the United States. Purdue Pharma has admitted it paid doctors and pharmacists to prescribe OxyContin widely, sometimes without a valid medical reason. But some state prosecutors say the company has got off lightly and the agreement does not hold it fully accountable for setting off an addiction epidemic that has killed more than 400,000 Americans in the last 20 years. ‘Catastrophic floods’: 105 killed, 5 million affected in Vietnam

Severe floods and landslides triggered by weeks of heavy rains have killed at least 105 people in central Vietnam and “swamped” five million, according to media reports and an aid agency. About a third of the dead included soldiers whose barracks were buried under deadly mudslides last week, Reuters news agency reported on Tuesday. At least 27 people are still missing, the agency said. Among them are 15 construction workers who were also hit by a landslide. At least 178,000 homes have been submerged and nearly 7,000 hectares (17,297 acres) of crops have been affected.
