The Taliban says it will not extend the August 31 deadline for foreign forces to evacuate American citizens and Afghans the US has worked with from Kabul airport. But Western countries warn the mission cannot be accomplished by the date given. After 9/11, United States President George W. Bush launched a ‘global war on terror.’ Within weeks, the Taliban was toppled for providing safe haven for Al al-Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden. In May 2011, US Special forces killed Osama bin Laden in neighbouring Pakistan. As the war continued, diplomatic efforts to reach a settlement intensified. In 2013, the Taliban opened an office in Qatar at the US’s request, but it wasn’t until 2020 that a peace deal was reached under the Trump Administration. The Taliban have taken control of Jalalabad, capital of Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, early on Sunday morning without a fight, according to officials and a resident. This effectively leaves the capital Kabul as the last major urban area under government control – it follows the Taliban’s seizure of the major northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif. The collapse of the eastern city would mean another major setback for President Ashraf Ghani’s government and will put the Taliban effectively in control of most of the country.
