“I hugged the olive tree… I’d raised the tree like my child.” Mahfodah Shtayyeh On November 27, 2005, a Palestinian woman was photographed hugging an olive tree after it was attacked by Israeli settlers. The photograph became an iconic image symbolising the daily struggle of many Palestinian farmers in the occupied West Bank. The bodies of more than 100 Palestinians, casualties of Israeli airstrikes, are laid to rest in a mass burial site. These bodies were moved from al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City to Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip for interment. According to Gaza’s health ministry these bodies, which are buried on land owned by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, were unidentified. Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara says the possible captive release deal should have been the beginning of a more “permanent ceasefire”. Israeli tanks are surrounding one of Gaza’s biggest hospitals.. Artillery strikes in the vicinity of the Indonesian hospital have killed at least 12 people. Hundreds of patients and thousands of displaced people are in the Indonesian hospital compound. Israeli tanks have surrounded the facility and troops are reportedly shooting anyone who tries to leave. Indonesia has condemned the attack as a violation of international humanitarian law. The Scottish Parliament is due to debate a motion in support of UN calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and the creation of safe routes for medical aid and displaced people.
