On a test track west of Tokyo, Japan’s Superconducting Maglev train hits 603km/h an hour, breaking the world train speed record. The test is part of an ambitious plan to build a $47bn high-speed line between Tokyo and Nagoya. If completed as planned in 2027 the 280km between the two could be travelled in around 40 minutes. Al Jazeera’s Tarek Bazley reports.

Japan’s Stalking Crisis | 101 East

It is a fear that haunts the lives of too many Japanese women; a silent epidemic with consequences that can be fatal: Japan is suffering a wave of violent male stalkers. And some victims are speaking out. Reports of stalking have increased ten-fold in the past decade, with more than 21,000 reported cases last year. But experts warn that this could be just the tip of the iceberg. Rates of stalking are growing faster in Japan than in any other nation. When a stalker murdered a woman in 2011, Japan’s anti-stalking law was toughened. But the killings continue. ‘Hiro’ began stalking his wife when she fled their home and his […]

Time to boycott Israel? | Head to Head

“Prospects have never been better for settling the Israel-Palestine conflict,” argues Norman Finkelstein, the controversial scholar and author of The Holocaust Industry and Method and Madness. But after more violence, yet another round of failed talks and 20 years of Israeli land annexation, is the two-state solution really still an option? In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges Norman Finkelstein on his proposal for resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict, and explores whether he has changed his tone on some of his more incendiary criticism of Israel. Once described as an ‘American Radical’, Finkelstein has also been branded by some a liberal Zionist, for his opposition to the one-state […]

The Day Israel Attacked America | Special Series

Al Jazeera investigates the shocking truth behind a deadly Israeli attack on a US naval vessel. In 1967, at the height of the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War, the Israeli Air Force launched an unprovoked attack on the USS Liberty, a US Navy spy ship that was monitoring the conflict from the safety of international waters in the Mediterranean. Israeli jet fighters hit the vessel with rockets, cannon fire and napalm, before three Israeli torpedo boats moved in to launch a second more devastating attack. Though she did not sink, the Liberty was badly damaged. Thirty-four US servicemen and civilian analysts were killed, another 171 were wounded. Later Israel apologised for what […]

South Korea’s cricket switch

Baseball is king in South Korea – but for a few weeks at least, there’s a new sport in town. Cricket is being held at the Asian Games in Incheon, and as hosts, the Koreans are putting out a team. Most of them had never played cricket until a year ago, but their baseball careers have helped them adapt – while their skill with chopsticks has been an unlikely aid to spin bowling. Paul Rhys reports.
