Fast-moving Atlantic Storm Elsa makes landfall in Cuba

Tropical Storm Elsa is on its way to the US state of Florida after its destructive path wreaking havoc in the Caribbean. Cuban officials had evacuated 180,000 people as a precaution against the possibility of heavy flooding from a storm that already battered several Caribbean islands, killing at least three people. The storm slowly moved north, towards the capital, where preparations were under way. St Vincent volcano: New ‘explosive event’ causes power cuts

The La Soufriere volcano on the Caribbean island of St Vincent and the Grenadines has had a new “explosive event”. The volcano erupted on Friday, shaking the ground and blanketing the island in a layer of fine volcanic rock after decades of inactivity, prompting an evacuation of residents nearby. On Saturday, eruptions and rumbling emanating from La Soufriere continued as Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves ordered the evacuation of residents close to the activity. The country’s National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) noted “another explosive event” early on Sunday morning with the “majority of the country out of power and covered in ash”. Saint Vincent awaits more volcanic eruptions as help offered

Ash from a volcanic eruption on the Caribbean island of St Vincent is now falling on the island of Barbados, nearly 200 kilometres (124 miles) away. Thousands of people have been forced to flee the eruptions, which authorities say could go on for weeks. Countries including Antigua, Cuba, Guyana, Venezuela and the United States are sending aid to the island nation, home to 100,000 people. What will Cuba’s new single currency mean for the island?

0 The Cuban government formally ended its dual currency system on Friday, devaluing its peso for the first time since the 1959 revolution that swept the late Fidel Castro to power. The government has set the exchange rate at 24 Cuban pesos to $1, and the convertible Cuban peso, known as the CUC, will be phased out completely by June, leaving the island with one currency for the first time in more than 20 years. Cuban doctors head to Italy to fight coronavirus
