Tens of thousands rally in Bangladesh to demand new elections

Thousands of supporters of the main opposition party have held a rally in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka. Supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and that new elections be held. The protesters say the government has failed to curb rising prices and that authorities have tried to suppress criticism. FIFA boss Infantino lauds Qatar 2022 group stage as ‘best ever’

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has hailed the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar as the ‘best ever’, saying there are no longer ‘small teams’ and ‘big teams’. Infantino says the level at the tournament is ‘very equal’ after an opening phase that featured some major upsets. Mozambique ex-president’s son, 10 others jailed over corruption

A court in Mozambique has sentenced the son of a former president, two ex-spy bosses, and eight others to years in prison for their part in a corruption scandal in which the government sought to conceal huge debts, triggering financial havoc. The 11 were found guilty and sentenced on Wednesday on charges related to a $2bn “hidden debt” scandal which saw hundreds of millions of dollars in government-backed loans disappear and crashed the southern African nation’s economy. Immigration staff at busiest UK airports to strike over Christmas

UK Border Force staff plan to go on strike at airports across the country during the busy Christmas period in a dispute over pay, one of the United Kingdom’s biggest trade unions said, as it warned that travellers will face severe disruptions. Border Force workers at several major British airports – including the country’s busiest, London’s Heathrow – will walk off the job for eight days, from December 23 to 31, the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union said on Wednesday. Peru political crisis: Congress removes Castillo, swears in new president

Peru has now sworn in a new president after former leader Pedro Castillo was impeached by Congress and detained. Castillo was arrested just hours after saying he would dissolve Congress by presidential decree – a move the country’s constitutional court said was a ‘coup d’etat.’ Congress moved ahead with a vote on whether he should be impeached. Germany arrests 25 over alleged far-right coup plot

In raids across the country, German police have arrested 25 suspected members and supporters of a far-right group who were allegedly seeking to overthrow the state by force, according to the federal prosecutor’s office.
