Long queues have formed at Russia’s land borders as people try to escape President Putin’s mobilisation of reservist forces. Flights out if the country are also said to be full, with tickets to the few countries that allow Russians visa-free travel selling at inflated prices. Finland to restrict entry from Russia as Russians flee

Germany gears up to become world’s third-largest military spender

Germany is gearing up to become the world’s third-largest military spender after the United States and China. As NATO members ramp up military spending after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a German parliamentary report has suggested the German military is lacking everything from heavy equipment to warm underwear. Critics have pointed out that the country has already increased its military spending by 55 percent in the past eight years, and they propose that efficiency, not money, is the problem. China fears: Taiwan considers extending army conscription

Taiwan is considering extending mandatory military service for young people following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The defence minister says four months of service would not be long enough in the event of a conflict. Rebel attacks kill more than 20 DRC soldiers

In Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), thousands of people have been forced from their homes because of fighting between the army and the rebel group known as M23. On Tuesday, an army position was attacked in Rutshuru, north of the city of Goma. M23 is widely believed to be backed by Rwanda and is one of more than 120 armed groups operating in eastern DRC.
