Europe’s Rhine River levels plummeting, hampering shipping

The Rhine River flows through six European countries and has been used to transport people and produce for thousands of years. But weeks of high temperatures and little or no rainfall have made it impassable for heavily laden ships. It is a main waterway for transporting coal, iron and other natural resources, and the lower the water level, the less cargo that can be carried on ships travelling its course. Hostage standoff at Beirut bank ends with gunman’s surrender

A hostage standoff in which a gunman demanded a Beirut bank let him withdraw his trapped savings has ended with the man’s surrender and no injuries. Authorities say 42-year-old Bassam al-Sheikh Hussein entered the Federal Bank in Beirut’s bustling Hamra district with a shotgun and a canister of gasoline and threatened to set himself on fire unless he was allowed to take out his money. South Korea: Clean-Up and Recovery underway in Flood-hit Seoul

South Korea’s capital Seoul will start phasing out basement apartments – after three people died in the flats during flooding this week. The tiny dwellings are usually rented out to people on low incomes. Clean-up and recovery efforts accelerated in South Korea’s greater capital region on Wednesday as skies cleared after two days of record-breaking rainfall that unleashed flash floods, damaged thousands of buildings and roads and killed at least 10 people. Sierra Leone imposes curfew amid anti-government protests

Anti-government protesters in Sierra Leone have clashed with police in the streets of the capital, Freetown, as tensions over the rising cost of living turned deadly in the West African nation. In a national broadcast on Wednesday, Vice President Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh said that “lives of both policemen and civilians were lost”, without giving further details. He announced a nationwide curfew from 3pm local time (15:00 GMT). Top Pakistan Taliban leader killed in Afghanistan roadside attack

A late night roadside bombing in eastern Afghanistan has struck a vehicle carrying members of the Pakistan Taliban, killing a senior leader and three other members of the group, several Pakistani officials and the group said. Abdul Wali, also known as Omar Khalid Khorasani, was a top commander of the Pakistan Taliban and was allegedly behind some of the deadliest attacks in recent years.
