After more than a month of devastating conflict, and more than 11,000 Palestinian and 1,200 Israeli deaths, the UN Security Council passed a resolution on Wednesday calling for extended humanitarian pauses and the release of captives held in Gaza. The US abstained from voting on the resolution, which does not mention the word ‘ceasefire’, and Israel has rejected the Security Council’s legally binding decision. In an interview with Al Jazeera a day after visiting southern Gaza, Catherine Russell said getting fuel inside the besieged territory “is absolutely critical”. “I visited the hospital in Khan Younis and there the incubators are working … but of course, the doctors are planning to think about what will happen if they no longer have the electricity or the generators to fuel them,” she said. “It’s obviously a huge concern, and I think the answer to that is we need to get more fuel into Gaza so that we can power not just these but other important things like the water treatment centres,” Russell added. “We also need fuel […]

Mukesh Kapila, a former UN humanitarian agency coordinator, says he has spent 30 years working in numerous conflicts around the world but describes Israel’s ongoing attack on Gaza as “unique”. He says that is because the most modern weapons are being used in one of the most densely populated areas on the planet. Kapila also denounced Israel’s repeated attacks on emergency services workers and overwhelmed medical facilities. “What we’re seeing now is that all rules have broken down and there are no norms because this is a war on a whole society. There are really no rules at all. What we need to happen, therefore, is a rescue from outside,” […]
Cornel West, the prominent philosopher, political activist, and independent candidate in the 2024 US presidential election, spoke to Al Jazeera about his support for Palestinian rights. He emphasized the need to differentiate between criticizing Israeli policies and harbouring anti-Jewish sentiment, pointing out the suffering and oppression experienced by both African Americans and Jews throughout history. West strongly condemned the ongoing Israeli assault in Gaza, describing it as a barbaric and genocidal attack on the dignity and humanity of the Palestinian people. He highlighted the importance of advocating for Palestinian rights without being unfairly accused of being anti-Jewish. The situation inside hospitals across the Gaza strip is a tragedy, said Toby Fricker, UNICEF’s spokesperson. Speaking to Al Jazeera from Amman, Jordan, he noted how premature babies inside al-Shifa Hospital are struggling to stay alive due to the lack of electricity, power and water. “Imagine being a father or mother of those children and sort of watching helplessly. So it’s really catastrophic right now,” he said. “There is no safe place for children anywhere across the strip right now,” he added, highlighting the need for international actors to ensure children in Gaza are protected as the ferocious bombardment continues.
