Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned after protests over the island nation’s worsening economic crisis turned deadly. In a statement on Monday, his office said he was quitting in order to help form an interim, unity government, following weeks of often violent protests across the country over spiraling prices and shortages of fuel and other vital imports. Muhyiddin Yassin has tendered his resignation as Malaysia’s prime minister but will stay on in a caretaker role until a successor is found. Yassin became prime minister in March 2020, after he and several members of parliament switched sides and brought down the reformist government. The palace said on Monday that holding elections is not currently feasible because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
