Aid is being sent from Thailand to people displaced by fighting in Myanmar after violence eased near the border in the past two days. But ethnic Karen fighters in Myanmar say they will only negotiate a ceasefire if Myanmar’s military leaves areas where fierce fighting has been taking place. The Karen National Union (KNU) said the area under its control in Karen state was hit last week by air raids and artillery rounds. The Nobel prize for literature has been awarded to the Tanzanian-born novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah. His work focuses on colonialism and the fate of refugees. Many migrants using inflatable rings and dinghies have often made the dangerous journey from Morocco into Spain. But this week an influx of at least 8,000 was unusually high, threatening a humanitarian crisis. Many were young men, but there were also families and unaccompanied minors. They have not attempted to leave the country in large groups yet, but neighbouring Thailand is preparing for the possibility of refugees.
