Dozens dead, millions stranded as floods hit Bangladesh, India

Heavy rain in Bangladesh has unleashed devastating floods and landslides, leaving an estimated four million people stranded. It is the start of monsoon season in the region, which lasts until October. Bangladesh and eastern India are regularly affected by floods, but experts say climate change is making it worse and it is the poorest communities that are hit the hardest. South Africa: Death toll reaches 45 in KwaZulu Natal floods

Flooding in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province has killed dozens of people. It follows heavy rain on Monday that has swept away roads, submerged homes and forced many people from their houses. Several others are missing and mudslides are hampering rescue work. The government has deployed the army to help emergency teams. Winter storm slams into eastern United States, brings heavy snow

A powerful winter storm packing heavy snow and high winds has pummeled the United States East Coast, forcing the cancellation of thousands of flights as severe weather alerts were sounded across the region of nearly 70 million people. With blizzard warnings in effect, cities including New York and Boston bore the brunt of the storm on Saturday morning, but the far-reaching system also hit the mid-Atlantic. Freeze alerts were raised as far south as Florida, where the National Weather Service (NWS) warned of “scattered to isolated falling iguanas from trees” as plunging temperatures temporarily paralysed the large lizards, which can weigh up to 20 pounds (9kg). Mass evacuations as super Typhoon Rai slams into Philippines

Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes in the Philippines as “one of the world’s strongest storms” of the year made landfall in mid-eastern parts of the island nation. The Philippine’s weather bureau, PAGASA, said Typhoon Rai made its first landfall in Surigao del Norte’s Siargao Island at 05:30 GMT on Thursday.
