Shots were fired from inside the Sri Lankan prime minister’s official residence on Monday, as thousands of protesters breached the main gate and torched a parked truck. Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned after protests over the island nation’s worsening economic crisis turned deadly. In a statement on Monday, his office said he was quitting in order to help form an interim, unity government, following weeks of often violent protests across the country over spiraling prices and shortages of fuel and other vital imports. The Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein has won the largest number of seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly for the first time. With almost all votes counted on Saturday, Sinn Fein had secured 27 of the assembly’s 90 seats. There have been fears that the Russia-Ukraine war is widening and that Russia has its sights set on former Soviet republic Moldova. Last week, a series of explosions were reported in different parts of Transnistria, a Russian-backed breakaway region in Moldova which borders Ukraine.
