At least 21 people have died after heavy snow trapped them in their vehicles as tens of thousands of visitors thronged Pakistan’s resort town of Murree. Most of the victims died of hypothermia, officials said. Among them was an Islamabad police officer and seven members of his family, fellow police officer Atiq Ahmed said. More than 4 feet (122cm) of snow fell in the area of the Murree Hills resort overnight Friday and early on Saturday, trapping thousands of cars on roadways, said Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. World-renowned paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey, known for his fossil-finding and conservation work in his native Kenya, has died at 77, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced. Leakey, whose groundbreaking discoveries helped prove that humanity evolved in Africa, remained energetic into his 70s despite bouts of skin cancer, kidney and liver disease. Born on December 19, 1944, Leakey was destined for palaeoanthropology – the study of the human fossil record – as the middle son of Louis and Mary Leakey, perhaps the world’s most famous discoverers of ancestral hominids. Aid is being sent from Thailand to people displaced by fighting in Myanmar after violence eased near the border in the past two days. But ethnic Karen fighters in Myanmar say they will only negotiate a ceasefire if Myanmar’s military leaves areas where fierce fighting has been taking place. The spokesperson for the National Unity Government of Myanmar is accusing the military in northwest Myanmar of carrying out massacres of civilians and destroying their homes. The destruction in the hilltop town of Thantlang, in Chin State, northwestern Myanmar, caused by artillery shells and fires set by Myanmar’s military, appears part of a concerted policy of scorched earth.
