At least 59 people are thought to have died in South Africa’s eastern coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal due to unusually heavy rainfall, according to media reports, while officials were still trying to assess the extent of the damage. President Vladimir Putin has said Russia’s military action in Ukraine was “unavoidable” and pledged that its goals in the conflict will be achieved. His comments on Tuesday came after he flew into Russia’s far east Amur region where he met Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. The visit marked Putin’s first known trip outside Moscow since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, sending tens of thousands of troops into the neighbouring country. The US’s consumer price index (CPI) in March has reached a new record. The inflation rate jumped to 8.5 percent compared with a year ago – the greatest annual rate increase since 1981. Compared with last month, the US CPI rose by 0.6 percent, reflecting higher fuel, food and housing costs. Economists say inflation will cost the average US household an extra $5,200 this year.
