US inflation jumped 8.5 percent in past year, highest since 1981

The US’s consumer price index (CPI) in March has reached a new record.
The inflation rate jumped to 8.5 percent compared with a year ago – the greatest annual rate increase since 1981.
Compared with last month, the US CPI rose by 0.6 percent, reflecting higher fuel, food and housing costs.
Economists say inflation will cost the average US household an extra $5,200 this year.
