Life sentence for Burkinabe ex-leader Compaoré for Sankara murder

A Ouagadougou court has sentenced former Burkinabe President Blaise Compaoré to life imprisonment for the murder of his predecessor, the revered Thomas Sankara. The long-awaited verdict brings to close a six-month trial about the murder of Sankara who was assassinated on October 15, 1987. Military prosecutors had requested a 30-year sentence for Compaoré, who was being tried alongside 13 others. Compaoré now lives in Ivory Coast and refused to take part in the trial. Sankara, a revered pan-Africanist leader, was murdered alongside 12 others by a hit squad during a putsch that brought his friend and comrade-in-arms Compaoré to power. Peru’s President Castillo lifts Lima lockdown amid criticism

Peruvian President Pedro Castillo has lifted a mandatory lockdown imposed in the country’s capital and a nearby town, after the measure spurred widespread criticism, anger and fresh protests in the streets of Lima. Castillo had late on Monday ordered residents to remain in their homes between 2am and 11:59pm local time in an effort “to re-establish peace and internal order” amid nationwide protests over rising fuel and food prices. “We will with immediate effect remove this [curfew]. We call on the Peruvian people to be calm,” Castillo said on Tuesday afternoon, alongside Congress President Maria Alva, as he cut the curfew short just after 5pm local time (10:00 GMT). Al […]

Peru: Protesters block highways over surging gas and fertiliser prices

Peruvians continued a wave of protests against a rapid surge in fuel and fertiliser prices triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as the Andean nation’s government moved to try to lower prices. The turmoil erupted last week as farmers and truckers blocked some main highways to Lima, leading to a sudden surge in food prices. The government responded over the weekend with a proposal to forego most taxes on fuel to lower prices while also raising the minimum wage. Analysts say President Pedro Castillo’s populist measures could eventually bring some peace, but a serious crisis looms ahead for him. Last week Castillo survived a second round of impeachment proceedings after […]

Sri Lankan cabinet resigns en masse as crisis deepens

Sri Lanka’s cabinet members have resigned en masse from their positions, the education minister said, as anti-government protests escalated despite curfews. All 26 ministers aside from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his elder brother Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa stepped down during a late-night meeting on Sunday, Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena told reporters. Imran Khan has survived a move to oust him as Pakistan’s prime minister, getting a reprieve when the deputy speaker of Parliament blocked a no-confidence motion as unconstitutional. Khan, whose fate was not immediately clear, later advised the country’s president to dissolve Parliament, leading to fresh political instability in the nuclear-armed country of 220 million people. The National Assembly deputy speaker, of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, dismissed the move against Khan on Sunday, saying it went against Article 5 of the Constitution.
