Russia threatens to up Kyiv strikes over cross-border attacks

Russia claims full control over Ukraine’s Mariupol

Russia says it is now in full control of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, but Ukraine says the resistance is still alive. Tens of thousands of civilians are trapped in the besieged city. South Africa: Death toll reaches 45 in KwaZulu Natal floods

Flooding in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province has killed dozens of people. It follows heavy rain on Monday that has swept away roads, submerged homes and forced many people from their houses. US inflation jumped 8.5 percent in past year, highest since 1981

The US’s consumer price index (CPI) in March has reached a new record. The inflation rate jumped to 8.5 percent compared with a year ago – the greatest annual rate increase since 1981. Compared with last month, the US CPI rose by 0.6 percent, reflecting higher fuel, food and housing costs. Economists say inflation will cost the average US household an extra $5,200 this year. Lebanon bank customers take legal action after losing life savings

Life sentence for Burkinabe ex-leader Compaoré for Sankara murder

A Ouagadougou court has sentenced former Burkinabe President Blaise Compaoré to life imprisonment for the murder of his predecessor, the revered Thomas Sankara. The long-awaited verdict brings to close a six-month trial about the murder of Sankara who was assassinated on October 15, 1987. Military prosecutors had requested a 30-year sentence for Compaoré, who was being tried alongside 13 others. Compaoré now lives in Ivory Coast and refused to take part in the trial. Sankara, a revered pan-Africanist leader, was murdered alongside 12 others by a hit squad during a putsch that brought his friend and comrade-in-arms Compaoré to power.
