Pakistan: At least 21 dead as heavy snow traps people in cars

At least 21 people have died after heavy snow trapped them in their vehicles as tens of thousands of visitors thronged Pakistan’s resort town of Murree. Most of the victims died of hypothermia, officials said. Among them was an Islamabad police officer and seven members of his family, fellow police officer Atiq Ahmed said. More than 4 feet (122cm) of snow fell in the area of the Murree Hills resort overnight Friday and early on Saturday, trapping thousands of cars on roadways, said Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed. Theranos’s Holmes found guilty on four counts in fraud trial

A United States jury found Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes guilty of conspiring to defraud investors in the blood-testing startup. Holmes was convicted Monday on four of 11 counts. She was acquitted on four counts, and the jury could not reach a decision on three counts. Prosecutors said Holmes, 37, swindled private investors between 2010 and 2015 by convincing them that Theranos’s small machines could run a range of tests with a few drops of blood from a finger prick. Holmes was also charged with misleading patients about the tests’ accuracy. Holmes rose to Silicon Valley fame after founding Theranos in 2003. Kenyan conservationist Richard Leakey dies aged 77

World-renowned paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey, known for his fossil-finding and conservation work in his native Kenya, has died at 77, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced. Leakey, whose groundbreaking discoveries helped prove that humanity evolved in Africa, remained energetic into his 70s despite bouts of skin cancer, kidney and liver disease. Born on December 19, 1944, Leakey was destined for palaeoanthropology – the study of the human fossil record – as the middle son of Louis and Mary Leakey, perhaps the world’s most famous discoverers of ancestral hominids. Thailand sends aid to Myanmar as violence eases near border

Aid is being sent from Thailand to people displaced by fighting in Myanmar after violence eased near the border in the past two days. But ethnic Karen fighters in Myanmar say they will only negotiate a ceasefire if Myanmar’s military leaves areas where fierce fighting has been taking place. The Karen National Union (KNU) said the area under its control in Karen state was hit last week by air raids and artillery rounds.
