US will designate Qatar as major non-NATO ally, Biden tells emir

The United States is planning to designate Qatar as a major non-NATO ally, President Joe Biden has told Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, a move that would formally upgrade the partnership between Doha and Washington. During a meeting with Sheikh Tamim at the White House on Monday, Biden called Qatar a “good friend and reliable partner”. “I’m notifying Congress that I will designate Qatar as a major non-NATO ally to reflect the importance of our relationship; I think it’s long overdue,” Biden said from the Oval Office. Taliban claims complete control of Afghanistan’s Panjshir

The Taliban has taken complete control of Panjshir province, the last area in Afghanistan held by resistance forces, says the group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid. Pictures on social media on Monday showed Taliban members standing in front of the gate of the Panjshir provincial governor’s compound. There was no immediate word from Ahmad Massoud, the leader of the opposition group resisting Taliban forces. Battle intensifies in Panjshir as Taliban, resistance claim gains

The battle for control of Afghanistan’s Panjshir Valley is showing no sign of easing, with Taliban and resistance fighters both claiming to have the upper hand. The region, walled off by mountains north of Kabul, is the last holdout against Taliban rule. There are reports of more fierce fighting between the National Resistance Front (NRF) – made up of militias and former Afghan security force members – and Taliban forces. Afghanistan: Departing US forces disabled planes, equipment at Kabul airport

Pakistan warns of increasing ISKP threat and Pakistan Taliban

Pakistan is warning of the increasing threat of the Islamic State in Khorasan Province, ISKP (ISIS-K) and the Pakistan Taliban. On Sunday, two Pakistani soldiers were killed in the first border incident since the Taliban re-assumed control of Afghanistan. Pakistan’s military condemned the attack and said that the Taliban should not allow the groups to use Afghanistan to launch attacks into Pakistan. Afghan refugee group arrives in Mexico after fleeing Taliban rule

Mexico has accepted yet another group of refugees from Afghanistan which include 124 journalists and their families. They landed in Mexico City’s international airport on Wednesday morning where Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard welcomed them in person. Their arrival follows the successful evacuation of an Afghan girls’ robotics team to the country on Tuesday. Mexico has taken in migrants and refugees from Central America but some experts have voiced concern about its ability to give them proper care.
