Over 200 former Afghan troops, officials killed since Taliban takeover: UN

More than 200 former Afghan soldiers and officials have been killed extrajudicially since August 2021 despite a general amnesty announced by the Taliban immediately after its takeover. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) – in its first report since the Taliban takeover two years ago – documented 800 cases of serious human rights violations, including arbitrary arrests and detentions, torture and enforced disappearances. UNAMA recorded almost half of all extrajudicial killings of former government officials and Afghan security forces during the first four months of Taliban rule. Taliban claims complete control of Afghanistan’s Panjshir

The Taliban has taken complete control of Panjshir province, the last area in Afghanistan held by resistance forces, says the group’s spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid. Pictures on social media on Monday showed Taliban members standing in front of the gate of the Panjshir provincial governor’s compound. There was no immediate word from Ahmad Massoud, the leader of the opposition group resisting Taliban forces. Battle intensifies in Panjshir as Taliban, resistance claim gains

The battle for control of Afghanistan’s Panjshir Valley is showing no sign of easing, with Taliban and resistance fighters both claiming to have the upper hand. The region, walled off by mountains north of Kabul, is the last holdout against Taliban rule. There are reports of more fierce fighting between the National Resistance Front (NRF) – made up of militias and former Afghan security force members – and Taliban forces. Afghanistan: Departing US forces disabled planes, equipment at Kabul airport

Taliban issues new warning against extending evacuation deadline

The Taliban says it will not extend the August 31 deadline for foreign forces to evacuate American citizens and Afghans the US has worked with from Kabul airport. But Western countries warn the mission cannot be accomplished by the date given. Chaos and violence as crowds keep growing outside Kabul airport

The crowds outside Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport continue to grow with each passing day of Taliban rule. Thousands of Afghans and foreigners are still waiting to flee Afghanistan, with more chaotic scenes at the airport. Getting there is perilous; the Taliban patrols the roads around the airport, the last remaining members of a CIA-backed Afghan intelligence force controls the last stretches leading to the north gate of the airport, and finally, foreign troops guard the mammoth gate.
