Taiwan is considering extending mandatory military service for young people following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The defence minister says four months of service would not be long enough in the event of a conflict. Russian forces have intensified their bombardment of the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol as street fighting has raged on Tuesday, a day after Mariupol authorities rejected Moscow’s ultimatum to surrender, Ukrainian officials said.
