Poland-Belarus tension: Warsaw says it will deploy troops to border

NATO member Poland says is sending 10,000 troops to its border with Belarus. Tensions between Warsaw and Minsk – which is Russia’s ally – have been rising recently. Poland says two Belarussian helicopters briefly entered its airspace, last week. The government is also concerned about the border area since hundreds of Wagner mercenaries arrived in Belarus, as part of a deal that ended a mutiny in Russia in June. After brief exile in Belarus, Wagner boss in Russia: Lukashenko

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko says the leader of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group, has returned to Russia suggesting he’s in St. Petersburg. He also says the offer to have Wagner fighters stationed in his country still stands. Yevgeny Prigozhin had gone into exile in Belarus after his brief mutiny — in a deal agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin. There has been much speculation in recent weeks regarding his whereabouts, with the mercenary leader not being seen in public since the mutiny. Wagner mutiny: Putin meets his defence and security officials

President Vladimir Putin has said for the first time that the Wagner mercenary group is fully backed by the state. He said it cost his nation a billion dollars last year. Russia’s president congratulated his forces and hailed their efforts to stop what he called a “civil war”. The head of Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, has landed in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. Russian and Belarus defence ministers sign deal on stationing tactical nuclear weapons

Defence Ministers from Russia and Belarus have signed a deal to station on the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. Russian President Vladimir Putin made the announcement in March. to station the weapons in the territory of his close regional ally. He said 10 aircraft capable of carrying tactical nuclear weapons are already in Belarus, and that a storage facility will be completed by July. It will be the first transfer of nuclear weapons to another country since the mid-1990s. Russia sees sanctions hit with currency value drop

The United States has announced additional sanctions against Russia’s central bank. They prohibit Americans from doing any business with the bank and freeze any of its assets held in the US. Russia extends military mission in Belarus indefinitely

French President Emmanuel Macron made phone calls to the leaders of Russia and Ukraine on Sunday as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to find a peaceful solution to the escalating crisis in eastern Ukraine.
