China’s economy slows sharply, fanning global recession fears

China has recorded its slowest economic growth since 2020. The slump is being blamed on its zero-tolerance COVID-19 policy, which has interrupted industry and flattened consumer spending. Second-quarter GDP grew just 0.4 percent, compared to the same period last year. Economists warn the government’s full-year growth target of 5.5 percent is out of reach.
