An African refugees stranded along the Tunisia-Libya border has died. He was part of hundreds of people stuck in the remote area for days. It is been nearly one week since a boat carrying about 700 refugees and migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea, off the Greek coast. Nine suspected people smugglers accused of playing a role in the tragedy are due to face court in the coming hours. The Greek coastguard has been criticised for not doing enough to save lives. Coastguards have recovered the bodies of at least 78 people, who drowned off the southern coast after their fishing boat sank. Operations are underway to find hundreds of others who are missing and feared dead. Survivors say the boat was carrying up to 700 migrants from several countries including Pakistan, Egypt and Syria. Three people suspected of human trafficking are under investigation. Caretaker Prime Minister Ioannis Sarmas has declared three days of national mourning. A record number of people are making the dangerous journey by boat from Tunisia across the Mediterranean to Europe. Many of them are from poor and conflict-hit countries in sub-Saharan Africa. At least four people are dead after an incident involving a small boat in the English Channel between Britain and France, the British government has said. According to British media reports, dozens of people were rescued after a small boat capsized in the icy water off the British coast on Wednesday. British radio station LBC reported that 43 people had been rescued. The vessel reportedly sank while trying to cross the English Channel, with at least 50 refugees and asylum seekers believed to be on board.
