Qatari PM highlights complexities in captive negotiations

Qatari PM Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has said there had been “false” reports on negotiations to release Israeli captives held in Gaza, without elaborating. During a news conference in Doha along with French Foreign Minister Colonna, Al Thani said that there were complexities in the field due to “Israeli military practices” in the enclave. In separate remarks, Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said efforts to secure the release of the captives required a “period of calm” and that leaks from the negotiations were “harmful”. Ceasefire or pause? Words UN members can’t agree on to stop Israel’s bombs

As pleas for a ceasefire in Gaza grow louder, there is a palpable sense of urgency at the United Nations. But the Security Council remains divided, struggling to find a unified voice as the turmoil drags on. With UN officials warning of a breakdown of civil order in Gaza, On Monday, members of the Security Council gathered for yet another emergency meeting on the war. The UN refugee agency for Palestinians tells the Security Council that forced displacement is taking place in Gaza, and Israeli attacks on civilians there are collective punishment. Two more resolutions to end Gaza violence fail at UN Security Council

The United Nations Security Council has again failed to take action on the Israel-Hamas conflict despite a deepening humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza. Russia and China on Wednesday vetoed a United States resolution that called for a humanitarian pause to allow humanitarian aid access, the protection of civilians and a stop to arming Hamas and other armed groups in the Gaza Strip. A rival text put forward by Moscow then failed to draw sufficient support. The US had toned down an initial draft released over the weekend after diplomats expressed shock at its failure to recognise the humanitarian crisis and its bold statement that Israel had a […]

Guterres says he’s shocked by misinterpretations of his statement to Security Council on Tuesday

Antonio Guterres says he was left “shocked” by the “misrepresentations” of his remarks regarding Hamas made on Tuesday during a meeting of the UN Security Council. “I am shocked by the misrepresentations by some of my statement … as if I was justifying acts of terror by Hamas. This is false. It was the opposite,” the UN chief told reporters. “I believe it’s necessary to set the record straight – especially out of respect for the victims and their families.” For in depth analysis, Mahjoob Zweiri is a Professor of Contemporary Middle East Politics at Qatar University. UN chief says ‘clear violations of international humanitarian law’ in Gaza

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has renewed his demand for a ceasefire in Gaza and said that international law was being violated in the war between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas. Israel has bombarded the besieged Gaza Strip relentlessly since October 7, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, killling at least 1,400 people according to Israeli authorities. Speaking before the 15-member UN Security Council on Tuesday, Guterres pleaded for civilians to be protected and warned that the fighting risked a wider conflagration in the region. Guterres also criticised Israel without naming it, saying, “protecting civilians does not mean ordering more than one million people to […]

Israel-Gaza war: China worried war could spill into a wider conflict

China is worried that this war is going to spill into a wider conflict. On Monday, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi made two separate calls to the foreign ministers of Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Speaking to Riyad al-Maliki, Wang said Beijing deeply sympathises with the difficulties of the Palestinian people. Wang condemned attacks on civilians. He said China is going to continue to provide humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people. During his phone call with Israel’s Eli Cohen, Wang urged Israel to do what it can to protect civilians. Wang said Israel has a choice between war and peace, and it is imperative that it must do everything it […]

UN Security Council to open debate on Gaza war

The United States has finalised its United Nations Security Council resolution. It calls for all measures necessary such as ‘humanitarian pauses’ and allows for ‘humanitarian access to Gaza’. A key sticking point has been the call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas – which does not appear in the US resolution. It is not yet clear when the Security Council will vote on the resolution although it is understood that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will attend the UN meeting on Wednesday. This is the third draft resolution issued since the conflict began. Previous ones by Russia and Brazil were vetoed. Al Jazeera’s Gabriel Elizondo joins us live […]

UN Security Council rejects Russian resolution calling for ceasefire

As expected, a Russian-drafted Security Council resolution has failed to gather the required minimum of nine votes in the UN after the US-led opposition towards it for being insufficiently critical of Hamas. The draft called for a humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas as well as the release of captives held in Gaza and the safe evacuation of civilians. The US accused Russia of giving “cover” to Hamas after the group was not mentioned in the resolution. The US is continuing to urge Israel to minimise the risk of civilian casualties, according to an envoy. Al Jazeera’s Gabriel Elizondo reports from the United Nations headquarters in New York.
